Chapter 5

The grand hallway of the Monroe estate was lined with expensive portraits and gilded mirrors, bathed in the same bright, flawless cinematic light as the dining room. Aaliyah walked with a steady, purposeful stride, her slender figure moving with an elegant, unstoppable momentum. Zoe had buried her face in Aaliyah’s neck, her sobs quieting down to soft, exhausted hiccups.

"We are going home, Zoe," Aaliyah whispered soothingly. "We are going to get some ice for your cheek, and we are going to watch your favorite movie. You never have to see these people again."

"I don't like Auntie Meredith," Zoe mumbled into the silk of Aaliyah's blouse.

"I know, baby. Neither do I," Aaliyah replied, her tone perfectly even.

Behind them, the sharp, frantic clicking of silver stiletto heels echoed against the marble floor of the hallway. Meredith was practically running to catch up, her sapphire silk dress swishing violently. The initial confusion on her fair, rosy face was rapidly mutating into a desperate, paranoid anger.

"Aaliyah! I am talking to you!" Meredith shouted, her American accent shrill and echoing off the high ceilings.

Aaliyah ignored her, reaching into her pocket to pull out her smartphone. She needed to make one phone call to end a lifetime of abuse.

"Don't you walk away from me when I am speaking to you!" Meredith shrieked.

Meredith closed the distance. Blinded by her own arrogance and the terrifying suspicion gnawing at her gut, she aggressively reached out. She grabbed Aaliyah’s arm, her manicured fingers digging hard into the fabric of the ivory blouse.

Aaliyah stopped dead in her tracks.

The transition from graceful elegance to lethal intimidation was instantaneous. Aaliyah violently pulled her arm free, breaking Meredith’s grip with a sudden, forceful twist that sent the older woman stumbling a half-step backward.

Aaliyah spun around to face her adopted sister. The light-skinned African American woman stood tall, her expressive dark eyes burning with a cold, unyielding fire. She held Zoe tightly to her chest with her left arm, entirely protecting the child from the unstable woman.

With her right hand, Aaliyah slowly raised her smartphone, holding the device squarely between them like a loaded weapon.

"Do not ever put your hands on me again," Aaliyah warned, her voice dropping into a register of pure, concentrated ice.

Meredith rubbed her wrist, her chest heaving as she glared at the phone. She let out a harsh, breathless laugh, though the sound was completely devoid of humor. She was trying desperately to reclaim the superiority she felt slipping through her fingers.

“You have no power over my company,” Meredith laughed with arrogant contempt. But as she looked into Aaliyah’s utterly calm, unflinching eyes, her voice began sharpening with an undeniable, rising panic. "Those papers were fake! You printed them to scare me! You are a middle-management nobody! You don't have the capital to buy out my board!"

Aaliyah did not raise her voice. She did not blink. She simply tapped the screen of her smartphone, unlocking the device.

"You have spent your entire life underestimating me, Meredith," Aaliyah said softly, the cinematic light catching the polished waves of her dark hair. "You spent Daddy's money on designer dresses and luxury vacations, while I took the scraps you left me and built an empire in the shadows. I didn't just buy out your board. I executed a hostile takeover of your parent company three hours ago. I own every single share of Monroe-Vanguard."

Meredith’s mouth dropped open, her fair skin turning the color of ash. The reality of her total destruction was finally staring her in the face.
