Chapter 3

The immediate aftermath of the violence was a sickening, suffocating silence, broken only by Zoe’s ragged, terrified sobs. Aaliyah dropped to her knees on the hardwood floor, entirely disregarding her pristine trousers. She reached out with trembling, desperate hands and pulled her weeping daughter fiercely into her arms.

"I've got you, baby. Mommy is right here. You are safe," Aaliyah chanted in a frantic, soothing whisper, pressing the little girl's head against her chest. She gently ran her fingers over the mild red mark swelling on Zoe's cheek, her heart shattering at the sight of the physical injury.

Aaliyah slowly lifted the crying Zoe into her arms, standing up to her full, graceful height. The maternal terror that had initially seized her was rapidly evaporating, entirely replaced by an apocalyptic, blazing fury.

She turned her head. Her expressive, almond-shaped dark eyes locked directly onto Meredith.

Meredith took a half-step backward, her silver heels clicking nervously as she encountered the absolute, murderous rage radiating from her adopted sister. The elegant, slender African American woman looked like a vengeful goddess under the bright cinematic lights.

“You attacked a five-year-old over a chair,” Aaliyah said. She was shaking with maternal fury, but her voice was incredibly low, measured, and lethally cutting. The words sliced through the air like a scalpel.

"She was ruining the silk!" Meredith stammered, pointing a trembling, ring-covered finger at the smudge. "I have told you a thousand times to control that child! She is out of control!"

"She is a baby!" Aaliyah fired back, taking a threatening step forward, clutching Zoe securely to her shoulder. "You put your hands on my child. If you ever come within ten feet of her again, I promise you, Meredith, you will profoundly regret it."

"Are you threatening me in my own parents' house?" Meredith shrieked, looking toward the head of the table for backup. "Mother! Did you hear what she just said to me?"

Patricia Monroe remained entirely seated in her grand chair. The sixty-three-year-old woman possessed a fair, rosy complexion that was completely devoid of empathy. She did not look at the weeping child in Aaliyah's arms. Instead, Patricia was staring with deep, visible distress at the puddle of ice water seeping into the expensive table linen.

"The water is going to ruin the mahogany finish," Patricia murmured, casually taking a sip from her wineglass, her pearls shifting against her collarbone. "Meredith, please ring the staff to bring some towels. This is an absolute disaster."

Aaliyah stared at her adoptive mother in stunned, horrifying disbelief. The woman had just watched her biological daughter physically assault a five-year-old child, and her only concern was the furniture.

"Is that all you have to say, Patricia?" Aaliyah demanded, her voice vibrating with disgust.

Gordon Monroe, who had not paused his meal for a single second during the entire altercation, let out a heavy, irritated sigh. The sixty-seven-year-old patriarch kept his eyes focused entirely on the piece of lamb he was cutting.

"We are trying to have a civilized holiday dinner," Gordon stated, his voice cold, irritated, and entirely stripped of compassion. He raised his silver dinner fork, gesturing dismissively toward the grand hallway. “Take her somewhere else. She’s ruining dinner.”

The sheer, breathtaking callousness of the patriarch’s command hung heavily in the bright, sunlit room. He was dismissing them like bothersome insects. Zoe clung tighter to Aaliyah’s neck, hiding her bruised face from the cruel monsters sitting at the table.
