Chapter 3

The brilliant, natural lighting of the atelier seemed to sharpen, casting hard, unforgiving clarity over the scene. Dominic Caradonna moved with slow, deliberate grace. He crouched down, his tailored trousers perfectly creasing, and extended a heavily tattooed hand toward the crimson carpet. His long fingers, decorated with refined, sharp ink, closed around the edges of the instant photograph. He stood back up to his full, imposing height, holding the glossy image into the bright light.
The photograph was undeniable in its clarity. It depicted Valeria Knox, wearing the exact same luxurious formal dress she currently had on, standing beside a sleek, black limousine on the tarmac of a private airport terminal. But she was not alone. Her arms were wrapped intimately around the neck of Luca Valenti, a notoriously ruthless rival Mafia capo. Their lips were locked in a passionate kiss.
Dominic stared at the image. His face remained a mask of flawless, handsome stone, the loose strands of wavy hair brushing his forehead. His cold, sharp eyes betrayed no heartbreak, only the terrifying, mechanical calculation of a man assessing a fatal treason.
Lucian Knox realized the severity of the situation in a fraction of a second. The forty-two-year-old Mafia associate felt the blood drain from his fair, rosy face. If Dominic fully processed the alliance between the Knox family and the Valenti syndicate, Lucian and his sister would not walk out of the perfume atelier alive.
"Dominic, wait, it's a manipulation!" Lucian shouted, his American accent cracking with sudden panic as he stepped forward, his polished leather shoes squeaking against the floor.
Lucian lunged desperately for the photograph, his hand swiping through the air in a frantic attempt to snatch the evidence from the Mafia Boss’s grip.
Dominic merely shifted his wrist, holding the photograph effortlessly out of Lucian's reach. He did not even look at the older man. His eyes remained locked on the image of his fiancée betraying his bloodline.
Margaret, still recovering her breath, reached out and gripped the fabric of Dominic’s unbuttoned shirt sleeve. Her hand was shaking, but her eyes burned with the fierce, protective fire of a matriarch.
"She knew exactly what I brought you," Margaret said, her voice shaking with adrenaline and outrage. "She tried to destroy it before I could reach the private room, Dominic. They have sold us out to the Valentis."
Dominic slowly turned his head to look at Valeria. She was standing frozen, clutching the stolen handbag against her chest, her luxurious dress shimmering in the bright light. Her engagement ring felt like a heavy, damning weight on her finger.
"You... allowed a Valenti... to put his hands on you," Dominic said. His volume remained terrifyingly low. He spoke slowly, inserting agonizing, controlled pauses between his words that amplified the deadly promise behind them. "You brought... my enemy's scent... into my home."

"Dominic, please, let me explain," Valeria pleaded, her voice trembling as she took a hesitant step backward. "Luca forced himself on me. It wasn't what it looks like!"
"A liar," Dominic murmured softly, his cold eyes slicing through her pathetic defense, "is always... the loudest person... in the room."
