Chapter 9

Arthur Sterling froze, his fair, rosy skin turning the color of ash. He was a man in his late sixties, usually exuding an aura of untouchable, aristocratic wealth. But under the blinding light of the chandeliers, and under the terrifying gaze of Nico Bellandi, he suddenly looked incredibly small and fragile.

"Nico, this is a misunderstanding," Arthur stammered, his hands raised defensively as the surrounding guests quickly backed away, leaving him completely isolated. "Elena was a wonderful woman, but she didn't understand the complexities of corporate finance. Those emails were part of a sanctioned disinformation campaign!"

"You sold my men to the federal government to protect your own embezzlement, Arthur," Nico said, his voice a low, lethal hum as he stepped away from the bridal table. "You bled the logistics accounts dry, and when the audits approached, you fed the Feds our weapons shipments as a distraction."

"It was a calculated risk!" Arthur shouted, panic overtaking his refined American accent. "The syndicate was bleeding money! I sacrificed a few cargo runs to keep the core businesses afloat! I did it for the family!"

"You did it to cover your tracks," Nico corrected, closing the distance between them with slow, predatory strides. "Elena found the discrepancies in your ledgers. That’s why you helped Marcella orchestrate the crash. You needed the only person smart enough to catch you dead and buried."

"I had nothing to do with her death!" Arthur screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Marcella, who was still weeping on the floor. "She hired the mechanic! She authorized the hit! I only provided the offshore routing numbers!"

"Complicity is guilt, Arthur," Nico said, stopping two feet away from the trembling executive.

Nico didn't shout. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply looked at Arthur with an expression of profound, chilling emptiness.

"Take him," Nico commanded quietly.

Four bodyguards lunged forward instantly. They grabbed Arthur by his arms and shoulders, wrestling him violently to the marble floor. Arthur thrashed and screamed, kicking his polished leather shoes against the stone, but he was no match for the hardened enforcers. They dragged him toward the service doors, his desperate pleas for mercy echoing through the bright, chaotic ballroom until the heavy wooden doors slammed shut behind him.

Nico turned back to the center of the room. He looked at Marcella, who was curled into a ball on the floor, her luxurious wedding gown stained with spilled champagne, blood, and dirt.

"I am your sister!" Marcella wailed, looking up at him with tear-streaked eyes. "We share the same blood! You cannot kill me!"

"I won't kill you today," Nico said, his voice flat and devoid of all emotion. "But you are no longer a Bellandi."

"What does that mean?" Marcella gasped, her eyes widening in horror.

"It means you are stripped of your name, your trust fund, and your protection," Nico stated, passing absolute judgment. "You have twenty minutes to leave this estate. You will walk out of those doors with nothing but the dress on your back. If you ever contact me, if you ever step foot in this city again, I will have Rafe hunt you down and finish what I started."

"Where will I go?" Marcella sobbed hysterically. "I have nothing without this family! I will die on the streets!"

"That sounds like a problem for the gutter," Nico replied coldly.
