Chapter 15

June tried to quit.

That surprised me more than almost anything.

“Why?”

She stood in my office holding her phone.

Same phone.

Different case.

“I don’t want Maisie depending on me because I was there that night.”

Good answer.

“What do you want?”

“To work here.”

“Then?”

“Normally.”

I understood.

People had started treating June like a hero.

Staff asked her opinions on security.

Guards deferred to her around Maisie.

Guests knew her name.

None of that was her job.

We had turned one brave act into a new hierarchy.

I almost did exactly what Silas always did.

Take a person’s usefulness and convert it into permanent role.

“No promotion.”

June blinked.

“No.”

I smiled faintly.

“You sound relieved.”

“I am.”

“Schedule change?”

“Yes.”

“Higher pay?”

She considered.

“Yes.”

Good.

Specific.

Not symbolic.

She remained housekeeper.

Maisie still loved her.

But June was allowed days off without the house behaving as if the child lost her protector.

That mattered.

I built multiple safe adults around my daughter.

House staff.

Guards.

My mother, eventually.

Me.

Safety should survive one person leaving the room.

Silas’s system had always depended on the opposite.

One gatekeeper.

One authority.

One version of truth.

We replaced that architecture slowly.

May you like

Not with slogans.

With ordinary permission to speak.
