Chapter 2

The absolute silence that blanketed the dining hall was deafening. The clinking of silver forks against fine china had completely ceased, leaving only the soft crackle of the marble fireplace. The elite guests held their breath, their eyes darting nervously toward the heavy oak exits. The atmosphere in the grand room had shifted from a celebratory birthday dinner to a potential execution ground in the span of thirty seconds. Donovan’s cold, observant eyes remained locked on Leonie, his silence radiating a lethal promise.
Leonie’s carefully constructed facade began to splinter. The sculpted satin of her evening gown seemed to lose its shimmer as a cold sweat broke out across her collarbones, flushing her fair, rosy skin. She let out a high-pitched, nervous laugh that echoed awkwardly against the ivory wall panels, her diamond earrings trembling violently.
“Donovan, please,” Leonie stammered, her hands fluttering in front of her as if to physically push the child’s innocent accusation away. “This is a horrible mistake. It is just a nightmare. Eddie is traumatized by Mara leaving us. He is just a little boy; his imagination is running wild.”
Donovan did not blink. He slowly withdrew his heavy, tattooed hands from the polished walnut table, standing perfectly straight. He looked out over the sea of frozen, terrified guests. His sharp jaw was set in stone, his high-bridged nose casting a dark shadow over his features.
“Do you all wish to remain seated while my family handles a private dispute, or will you find the exits yourselves?” Donovan asked, his tone dangerously calm and commanding.
The response was instantaneous and chaotic. Chairs scraped violently against the polished hardwood floor as dozens of powerful men and women scrambled to their feet. No one wanted to be in the crossfire when Donovan Pierce unleashed his legendary wrath. Within moments, the grand dining hall was entirely empty, save for the four people remaining at the head table and the heavy security detail standing silently by the doors.
Leonie took a tentative, desperate step toward Donovan, reaching a trembling hand out to touch the dark lapel of his tailored suit.
“Darling, please, let us go upstairs and put Eddie to bed,” she pleaded, her American accent dropping to a harsh whisper. “You know how much I love you. You know Mara abandoned us four months ago. Why are you listening to this madness?”
Donovan stepped back smoothly, allowing her hand to fall into empty space. His thick, slightly wavy hair caught the candlelight as he tilted his head, his gaze burning right through her polished exterior.
“Why is your pulse racing so violently in your neck if this is merely a child's nightmare, Leonie?” Donovan asked, his voice low and deliberate.
“I am simply stressed by the scene!” she cried out, genuine panic finally bleeding into her voice. She spun around to face Maisie, her sorrowful mask melting into a snarl of pure venom. “This is your doing! You put him up to this! You have been filling his head with lies to ruin my position in this house!”
Maisie stood her ground, keeping her body angled protectively in front of Eddie. “I have done nothing but listen to your son, Miss Voss.”

Donovan stepped between them, his towering frame blocking Leonie's path to the housemaid. He looked down at the mistress he had brought into his home, his eyes pitch black.
“Do you believe you possess the authority to threaten my staff while I am standing in the room? Do you think I am blind to the terror currently bleeding through your makeup?”
