Chapter 1

The crowded evening birthday dinner inside Donovan Pierce’s sprawling mansion was an overwhelming display of wealth, power, and untouchable status. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung from the soaring ceilings, casting a warm, heavy golden light across pristine ivory wall panels and intricate gilded moldings. A massive marble fireplace roared at the far end of the room, radiating a heat that failed to touch the cold, observant eyes of the mafia boss sitting at the head of the table. Tall wax candles glowed fiercely in ornate silver candelabras, nestled among sprawling centerpieces of white roses, fine translucent porcelain, and glittering crystal stemware. The polished walnut tables were surrounded by champagne velvet chairs, occupied by the city’s most dangerous and elite figures. Every guest, boasting fair, rosy skin illuminated by the ambient glow, conversed in polite, low murmurs with crisp American accents, creating a steady hum of manufactured joy.
At the head table sat Donovan Pierce. He was movie-star handsome, possessing powerful shoulders that easily filled out a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit. His face was a landscape of sharp, unforgiving angles, featuring a high-bridged nose, a razor-sharp jawline, and extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was swept back with immaculate precision. Heavy gold glinted from a signet ring on his finger and a luxury wristwatch peeking from his cuff. Refined, intricate tattoos crawled across his knuckles and hands, with a small, distinct tattoo visible on his neck above his collar.
To his right sat his seven-year-old son, Eddie, dressed impeccably in a formal dinner jacket, a crisp buttoned shirt, and polished shoes. To Donovan’s left stood his mistress, Leonie Voss. She was breathtaking in a sculpted satin evening gown that clung to her curves, her ears dripping with diamond earrings that matched the heavy, ornate bracelet resting on her wrist.
Maisie Rowan, a housemaid of staggering beauty, moved silently beside the boy. She possessed a softly oval face, expressive brows, and delicate cheekbones. Her dark hair was gathered into a loose, elegant French twist. She wore a fitted black maid dress with a cinched waist, a short A-line skirt, and a pristine white apron, collar, and cuffs. Elegant and polished, she leaned down to unfold a heavy cloth napkin across Eddie’s lap.
Suddenly, Eddie caught Maisie’s hand. He looked directly at the beautiful maid, his wide eyes desperately seeking comfort. His lower lip trembled slightly, his fair skin paling.
“Mommy?” Eddie whispered, his small voice cracking.
Donovan noticed the boy's frightened grip immediately. He turned his head, looking directly into Maisie’s eyes. When he spoke, his deep, quiet voice carried controlled pauses that commanded instant obedience. Every guest in the room stopped eating. The music faded. The room fell dead silent.
“Maisie, what frightened Eddie?” Donovan asked.
Leonie immediately stepped into the suffocating silence. She met Donovan’s cold gaze with a faint, perfectly manufactured, reassuring smile. Her eyes searched his expression, desperately seeking agreement.
“Maisie’s confusing Eddie, darling,” Leonie said smoothly.
Maisie did not back down. She held the mafia boss's intense gaze, moisture rapidly gathering along her lower eyelids as the horrific weight of the boy's previous confession hit her. Donovan stood up, rising to his full, imposing height between his mistress and both the maid and his son.
“Eddie saw your wife downstairs,” Maisie said, her voice steady.
Eddie looked directly at Leonie. His small fingers tightened like a vice around Maisie’s hand. He spoke softly, with a frightened, absolute certainty that shattered the room.

“Mommy’s in your freezer.”
Donovan froze. He looked briefly down at his trembling son. Slowly, deliberately, he shifted his gaze toward Leonie, followed by a slight, predatory turn of his head. His sharp jaw tightened, the muscles ticking beneath his stubble, as he locked her in a cold, furious stare.
