Chapter 9

The boardroom fell into a silence so absolute that the distant hum of the building's ventilation sounded like a roar.

"You... you destroyed us," Andrew choked out, his knees buckling as he sank back into his chair, his head buried in his hands. "Over a haircut? You burned down forty years of family history over a haircut?!"

Maya rounded on him, her eyes flashing with a sudden, volcanic fury that made every man in the room flinch.

"It was never about hair, Andrew," Maya said, her voice ringing off the glass walls with absolute, devastating clarity. "It was about the fact that you looked at an innocent child who shares your blood, a child who looked to you for protection, and you chose to participate in her torment. You chose your mother's petty, vicious cruelty over your daughter's safety."

Maya reached into her suit jacket, withdrew a legal document stamped with blue court seals, and tossed it onto the table in front of Andrew.

"What is this?" Andrew whispered through his tears.

"That is an unconditional, voluntary relinquishment of all parental rights," Maya stated coldly. "Along with a complete waiver of any claims to Lucy's trust fund, my estate, or future contact. You will sign it right now."

"I won't sign it!" Andrew yelled, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "She's my daughter! You can't take her from me!"

Frank stepped forward, drawing a customized, matte-black 1911 pistol from his shoulder holster with a smooth, metallic click. He laid the weapon gently on the mahogany table, right next to the blue legal document, the polished steel glinting under the direct sunlight.

"The Boss wasn't asking for a negotiation, Mr. Whitaker," Frank said, his gravelly voice low and lethal. "You sign the document with the pen, or we take you down to the Brooklyn piers, and you sign it with your blood."

Arthur grabbed Andrew’s arm, his voice trembling with old, defeated desperation. "Sign it, Andrew. Sign the damn paper. She'll bury all three of us if you don't."

Andrew looked at the heavy pistol. He looked at Frank’s stone-cold expression. And finally, he looked into Maya’s unblinking, pitiless grey eyes.

With shaking fingers, Andrew picked up the gold Montblanc pen from the table. He signed his name on the three designated lines, his tears dripping onto the legal parchment, smearing the ink of his own surrender.

Maya picked up the signed document, blew lightly on the wet ink, and handed it to Frank.

"Escort Mr. Whitaker and his mother off the premises," Maya commanded, turning her back on them. "They have two hours to remove their personal clothing from the Greenwich estate before the locks are changed. If either of them steps foot within five hundred yards of Lucy or my property again, do not call the police. Handle it permanently."

"Understood, Boss," Frank said, signaling his men.

Elaine began to wail—a high, broken, humiliated sound—as two guards grabbed her by the elbows, dragging her toward the double doors while Andrew stumbled behind them, his life reduced to ashes in less than an hour.
