Chapter 2

The revelation hit Lowell with the force of a physical blow, though his angular face revealed nothing. The cold, calculating machinery of his mind absorbed the sheer vulnerability and reckless bravery shining in Benedetta’s eyes. The bright, cinematic lighting of the ballroom caught the natural, rosy flush on her delicate cheekbones, contrasting sharply with the pale, terrified set of her mouth. He knew exactly the kind of poison his uncle favored—colorless, tasteless, and completely untraceable until the heart stopped.
"You shouldn't be here, Benedetta," Lowell warned quietly, his voice pitched so only she could hear over the ambient noise. "Step back. They will not hesitate to hurt you."
Benedetta shook her head slightly, her hand remaining steadfastly near his face. "I won't let them do this to you, Mr. Ashford," she breathed, her gaze darting nervously toward Thaddeus.
Thaddeus noticed the whispered exchange. His face twisted with absolute disgust. The fact that his younger nephew, the supposed terror of the syndicate, was finding comfort in the presence of a lowly servant infuriated him. It ruined the narrative of total dominance he was trying to project to the capos seated around the banquet tables.
"Get this girl out of my sight," Thaddeus snapped, turning his attention back to Lowell.
Benedetta did not retreat. She held her ground, an impenetrable shield of black and white lace, trying to protect the king from the traitor.
"Your men take orders from me now," Thaddeus smirked, his eyes filled with a manic, victorious glee. "The entire perimeter is secured by my loyalists. You have nothing left, Lowell. Not a single gun in this room will fire for you."
"Is loyalty so easily bought, Thaddeus, or simply rented for the evening?" Lowell asked quietly, his observant eyes piercing through his older uncle's bravado.
The taunt worked. Thaddeus snarled, his patience completely exhausted. He snatched up Lowell’s crystal wineglass, which had been poured from the tainted private decanter moments before the ambush began.
Still gripping Lowell’s necktie tightly with his left hand, pulling the younger man forward, Thaddeus brought the glass toward Lowell's mouth.
"Hold him," Thaddeus commanded sharply to the two bodyguards. "He’s drinking it."
The massive men tightened their iron grip, forcing Lowell's shoulders down.
Lowell turned his face violently away, clenching his sharp jaw shut. The chilled glass bumped roughly against his cheek, the poisoned liquid sloshing dangerously close to the rim.
Benedetta’s expressive eyes widened in pure, unadulterated horror as the rim approached his lips. She saw the aggressive shift in Thaddeus's shoulders. She knew that if a single drop passed Lowell's lips, the man she cared for would be dead before the dessert course was served.
She did not scream. She did not plead for mercy. Driven by an instinctual, protective fire that overrode her terror, Benedetta stepped smoothly and deliberately between them. Her flat shoes provided perfect traction on the marble floor.
Before Thaddeus could force the glass any closer, Benedetta grabbed his silk necktie with both hands.
With blinding speed, she gave one forceful, desperate, sideways yank.
Already leaning awkwardly forward to force the drink, Thaddeus completely lost his balance. He recoiled, crying out in shock as his center of gravity betrayed him. He dropped sideways, crashing heavily into the adjacent, empty padded dining chair.
The wineglass shattered against the table. The tainted wine spilled darkly across his expensive formal suit and the pristine white tablecloth.

Both bodyguards, trained to prioritize their employer's physical safety, instantly released Lowell's arms to catch their stumbling, gasping boss.
The sudden, brutal violence perpetrated by a housemaid shattered the atmosphere of the room. The mocking silence of the guests evaporated. Dozens of powerful, dangerous adults froze, staring in utter disbelief at the beautiful woman in the black maid dress who had just overthrown a senior syndicate boss.
