Chapter 10

"What happens now?" Benedetta asked softly, leaning into the warmth of his hands.
"Shall we go rebuild our empire?" Lowell asked.
Before she could answer, Lowell leaned down, capturing her lips in a fierce, demanding kiss that sealed her fate to his forever. The war was over, but the reign of the new queen of the Ashford syndicate had just begun.
The morning sun cast a cold, pale light over the shattered glass and scarred marble of the Ashford estate. The air still smelled faintly of cordite and smoke, a lingering ghost of the violence that had claimed the night. But inside the grand dining gallery, where the chaos had first been ignited, a strange, profound peace had settled. The velvet chairs were righted, the debris swept away, and the fortress stood unbowed.
Lowell stood by the tall, repaired windows of his private study, gazing out over the sprawling grounds. He had changed into a fresh, immaculate dark three-piece suit, his powerful shoulders carrying the weight of his newly solidified empire. The neatly trimmed stubble on his jawline perfectly framed his cold, observant eyes as he listened to Marcus’s final casualty report.
"Are the remaining Falcone territories completely under our control, Marcus?" Lowell asked, not turning away from the glass.
"Yes, Boss," Marcus grunted, shifting his weight. "The capos surrendered at dawn. The entire eastern seaboard is yours now. And Thaddeus... the commission has washed their hands of him. They leave his fate entirely to you."
"Do you believe they will show him any mercy if I fail to make an example of him?" Lowell inquired, his deep voice dropping to a terrifying, satisfied rumble.
"Not a chance in hell, sir," Marcus replied grimly.
As Marcus left, the heavy oak door of the study opened again. Benedetta stepped inside, and Lowell’s breath hitched slightly in his chest. She was no longer wearing the sophisticated black maid dress. Instead, she wore a beautifully tailored, emerald-green silk blouse and dark trousers, clothes Lowell had ordered for her before the sun rose.
"Did you sleep at all, Benedetta?" Lowell asked, closing the distance between them.
"A little," Benedetta answered softly, stepping into his waiting arms. "The house is quiet now."
"Do you believe the savior of the Ashford family should ever wear a maid's uniform again?" Lowell asked, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touching his lips as he offered her his arm.
"I think I look better in silk," Benedetta whispered, a small smile playing on her lips.
"Shall we go remind my uncle of the penalty for treason in my house?" Lowell asked, turning away from the window and leading her out of the study.
They descended into the cold, concrete labyrinth of the sub-basement. The air grew damp, smelling of earth and iron. Marcus unlocked the heavy steel door to Thaddeus's cell, pulling it open with a loud groan.
Thaddeus was huddled on the metal cot, his expensive formal suit ruined beyond recognition, stained with dried wine and dirt. When he saw Lowell, he scrambled to the floor, his eyes wild with terror.
"Lowell! Please!" Thaddeus sobbed, crawling toward his polished leather shoes. "The commission... where is the commission? They were supposed to intervene!"
"Do you truly believe men who hide behind locked doors could save anyone?" Lowell asked, looking down at him with absolute, unwavering disgust.
"A slaughter?" Thaddeus gasped, his face turning pale as he noticed the soot still clinging to Lowell's shoes. "No... no, you're lying! Falcone had an army!"
"Did you think an army of cowards could defeat a man fighting for his life?" Lowell inquired, his voice echoing in the small, concrete room.
Thaddeus looked past Lowell, his eyes widening as he registered Benedetta standing beside him, wearing silk instead of a maid's apron.
"You!" Thaddeus shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at Benedetta. "You ruined everything! You are nothing but a servant!"
"Is she a servant, or is she the woman who will wear the ring you so desperately coveted?" Lowell asked, stepping protectively in front of Benedetta.
Thaddeus collapsed, sobbing hysterically as the reality of his total defeat crushed him. "What are you going to do to me? Please, Lowell, just let me go!"
"Do you believe you will ever see the sun again, Thaddeus?" Lowell asked quietly.
He didn't wait for his answer. He turned his broad shoulders, leading Benedetta out of the cell. As the heavy steel door slammed shut, cutting off Thaddeus's screams, Lowell looked down at the beautiful woman holding his arm.

"Are you ready for the life that comes next, Benedetta?" Lowell asked, a rare, genuine softness touching his features in the dim, concrete hallway.
"I am ready," Benedetta whispered, stepping into the future with the king of the underworld.
