Chapter 15

Olivia—no, there was no Olivia here.
That correction happened inside my own thinking one day while reviewing other family disputes.
Too many children had been turned into symbols by adults.
I stopped myself.
Isabella was not a lesson.
Not a succession problem.
Not Elena’s replacement.
Not my weakness.
She was my daughter.
That sounds obvious.
Powerful families make obvious things complicated.
I wrote one household rule and had it distributed everywhere:
No instruction involving Isabella is valid unless it comes directly from me or from a guardian explicitly named by me.
Then another:
If Isabella asks for me, someone tells me.
Always.
No exceptions for meetings.
No exceptions for guests.
No exceptions because somebody thinks the question can wait.
My council chief looked at the second rule.
“Even during negotiations?”
“Yes.”
“What if it’s nothing?”
“Then I lose thirty seconds.”
May you like
He nodded.
That was cheaper than losing months of my child’s trust.
