Chapter 14

Marco and Camilla separated for a time.

Not because I ordered it.

Because she learned how much he had hidden even from her.

Marco knew more about the staged threats than he admitted during their marriage.

He knew Sofia had connected the payments.

He knew Camilla promised Sofia she would tell me.

And he encouraged silence.

Not by threatening Camilla.

By asking one question repeatedly:

“Do you want Domenico to destroy what’s left of the family?”

Manipulation through responsibility.

Make the truth-teller feel guilty for consequences.

Camilla had carried that for five years.

Again.

Explanation.

Not excuse.

She moved into her own home.

Marco remained outside authority.

Their adult children chose relationships with both.

Messy.

Normal.

I did not interfere.

The old Valenti instinct would have demanded keeping the marriage intact for appearance.

I had no interest.

A family is not stronger because unhappy people share an address.

Marco eventually asked to apologize to me.

I allowed it.

He said:

“I thought I could control how far the Table went.”

I stared.

“That sentence should be carved above every bad decision.”

He almost smiled.

Then stopped.

“I’m sorry about Sofia.”

That one hurt.

“For what?”

“For making her afraid.”

Specific.

Good.

Not “for her death.”

He had not caused it knowingly.

Not “for everything.”

Too easy.

For making her afraid.

I accepted hearing it.

May you like

Not forgiveness.

Just truth landing where it belonged.
