Chapter 2

Nico stood utterly motionless, his breathing so calm it seemed as though the air around him had frozen solid. His dark beard bristled slightly as his jaw set into granite, but his eyes never blinked. He smoothed his hand over Mila’s trembling spine, murmuring into her ear in a voice as soft as velvet: "I have you, little bird. Don't look."

Slowly, Nico turned his head toward the far side of the garage, looking past the row of vintage sports cars toward the armored black SUV.

There stood his daughter, Sienna.

At thirty-eight weeks pregnant, she looked agonizingly fragile, her ivory maternity dress stretched taut over her high, rounded belly. Her soft knit cardigan was bunched in her trembling fists, one hand cupping her unborn child while the other braced against the SUV’s rear quarter panel. Her fair, rosy complexion had gone translucent with shock, and a thin line of dried blood marked the corner of her lower lip.

Standing directly in front of her was Gavin Cole.

Thirty-nine years old, dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue suit with a platinum watch gleaming at his wrist, Gavin adjusted his cuffs with theatrical nonchalance. He took two steps forward, positioning his body to block Sienna from Nico’s sightline.

"Don't listen to her, Nico," Gavin said, his tone flat, callous, and dripping with defensive arrogance. “That little brat is lying.”

Nico’s expression did not crack. It shifted into something ancient, desolate, and terrifyingly still. He gently placed Mila down behind his left leg, tucking her against the concrete pillar out of harm's way.

"Stay behind me, Mila," Nico said. His voice was extraordinarily low, the pauses between words measured with rhythmic, lethal precision. "Do not move."

Nico took one step toward his son-in-law.

Gavin’s face flushed red with sudden, reckless fury. Convinced that seventeen years of youth gave him the advantage, Gavin sneered, raised his right fist, and threw a heavy, desperate haymaker aimed straight at Nico’s jaw.

"You don't talk down to me in front of my family—"

Nico didn't even shift his footing. He simply dipped his chin, slipping effortlessly to the outside of the incoming punch. The displaced air brushed harmlessly past his ear.

Before Gavin could pull his shoulder back, Nico drove a devastating, short-range counterpunch directly across the younger man's cheekbone.

The sound of knuckles smashing into bone echoed like a gunshot.

The kinetic force lifted Gavin off his feet. He spun backward through the air, crashing spine-first into the tall rolling tire rack. The heavy steel frame groaned under the impact and tipped violently. Four massive, high-performance racing tires broke free from their upper slots, bouncing across the concrete with hollow thuds before rolling between the parked cars. The entire rack buckled, collapsing across Gavin's chest, burying his groaning, bleeding form beneath rubber floor mats, loose chrome wheel covers, and twisted steel piping.

Before the echoes of the crash could settle, Sabrina let out an unhinged, feral shriek.

"You animal!" she screamed, lunging across the floor with the scissors raised, aiming directly for Mila.

Nico pivoted on his heel without a wasted movement. He intercepted her mid-stride, his left hand swatting the steel shears from her grasp so hard they clattered twenty feet away into a drain. With his right hand, Nico delivered one thunderous, open-handed slap across Sabrina’s face.

The blow cracked through the garage like thunder.

Sabrina was launched sideways, her designer heels flying from her feet as she collided full-force with the wall-mounted detailing shelf. The wooden structure ripped free from its anchors. Plastic spray bottles exploded on impact, sending misty clouds of chemical solvent into the air. Microfiber towel bundles burst across the floor like blue confetti, heavy foam polishing pads rained down upon her shoulders, and a stack of five empty wash buckets toppled in a deafening cascade around her limp, crumpled body.

Ten feet away, Marjorie backed against the wall, clutching her pearls with trembling hands, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps.

Nico did not look at her. He walked three slow paces across the concrete, bent down, and retrieved Mila’s severed braid from the floor. He tucked the coil of hair carefully into his inner breast pocket, right against his heart.

He stood tall between Sienna, his granddaughter, and the three broken Coles.

Nico’s voice was dead calm.

"Now tell me," he paused, his eyes drilling into Marjorie's pale face, "what else you’re hiding."
