Chapter 8

The room was not a storage closet. It was a fully operational surveillance and command center.
The natural light from the hallway spilled over multiple computer monitors glowing on a long folding table. The walls were plastered with high-resolution, printed photographs. James walked slowly into the center of the room, his polished shoes silent on the carpet.
Pinned to the corkboards were blueprints. Not just any blueprints, but the highly classified, detailed architectural schematics of the Bennett family estate. Every entrance, every blind spot in the camera coverage, and the exact patrol routes of James's personal security detail were highlighted in red marker.
"Boss," the lead bodyguard said, stepping into the doorway behind James. The seasoned professional looked at the walls, his fair face draining of color. "This is a hit room. They've been mapping your compound for months."
James stared at a massive photograph pinned to the center of the board. It was a picture of him, taken through a sniper's scope, walking out of his favorite restaurant downtown. Below it was a picture of Emily, heavily pregnant, with a red circle drawn around her stomach.
"They weren't just planning to kill me," James whispered, his voice dangerously soft. He reached out and touched the photograph of his daughter. "They were waiting for the child to be born. They wanted the heir."
"We gave them the schedules, James!" Linda wept from the hallway, realizing the absolute totality of her exposure. "Ryan set up the cameras in your house during the wedding reception! Volkov wants your territory, and he said if we delivered the schedules and the baby, we could walk away rich!"
"You sold my daughter to a butcher," James said, turning slowly around to face the hallway. The cinematic brightness of the apartment outside stood in sharp, sickening contrast to the dark, treacherous reality contained in this room.
"He was going to hurt her anyway!" Linda screamed, desperately trying to justify the betrayal. "If Ryan didn't marry her, Volkov was just going to bomb her car! We kept her alive! You owe us, James!"
James walked back out into the hallway, leaving the door open. He looked at Linda, who was shaking in the wooden chair.
"I owe you," James repeated, the cold, military precision returning to his posture. He looked down at Ryan, who was just beginning to groan, his eyelids fluttering as consciousness returned.
"Tie him to the chair next to his mother," James commanded his men.
The bodyguards hauled Ryan up by his collar, dragging him across the floor and slamming him into a second chair. Ryan gasped, spitting blood, his broken face a mask of agony as he realized his wrists were bound.
"Emily," James called out gently, walking back toward the bedroom. "Are you listening to me?"
May you like
"I hear you, Dad," Emily replied, her voice remarkably steady despite the tears on her face.
"Pack a bag," James instructed softly. "You are coming home with me."
