Chapter 1

The sunlit conservatory of the estate was drenched in brilliant, cinematic light, reflecting off crystal chandeliers and towering arches of white hydrangeas. Soft jazz drifted through the crowded hall where dozens of guests—dressed in bespoke linens, pastel silks, and diamond cufflinks—gathered to celebrate the upcoming birth of the Moretti-Hale heir. Every face in the room bore the fair, rosy complexion of generational wealth, laughing over flutes of chilled champagne.
At the center of the terrace stood Emily Moretti. At twenty-five, her beauty was breathtaking, radiant even beneath the pale lilac maternity gown that draped softly over her seven-month belly. Yet her fingers trembled against the silk of her cashmere shawl.
Standing directly beside her, sixty-two-year-old Linda Hale surveyed the room with sharp, predatory eyes. Without warning, Linda’s manicured hand shot forward. Her fingers caught the edge of Emily’s shawl and wrenched it downward with violent force.
The fabric slid away, exposing Emily’s pale forearms. Dark, yellowing bruises bloomed across her tender skin, distinct finger marks pressed deep into the flesh.
A sharp gasp rippled through the nearest cluster of guests.
Linda’s rosy face instantly drained of color, replaced by frantic, vicious panic. Before Emily could pull back, Linda struck her—a sharp, stinging slap that snapped Emily’s head to the side.
"Cover those before your father sees," Linda hissed, her American accent trembling in a harsh, hurried whisper as her hands frantically clawed at the shawl, trying to shove the fabric back over Emily’s bruised arms. "Do you hear me? Put it back on right now!"
Emily stumbled, her low heels catching on the hem of her gown. Tears spilled over her lashes, but before she could speak, the heavy mahogany double doors of the adjoining council chamber swung open.
Salvatore Moretti stepped out onto the marble floor.
At fifty-eight, he possessed the commanding, breathtaking presence of an old-Hollywood icon. Impeccably groomed, with thick, dark hair swept back and silvered lightly at the temples, his angular face and sharply defined jawline were framed by a neat, masculine full beard. In his bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, custom signet ring, and polished leather shoes, he was the undisputed sovereign of the eastern seaboard.
Salvatore’s cold, slate-grey eyes swept across the reception, locking instantly onto his daughter’s bare, mottled arms and the red handprint burning across her cheek.
The warmth evaporated from the room.
Emily broke away from Linda’s grip, stepping toward him with tears streaming down her face.
"Dad…" Emily cried, her voice breaking in front of eighty silent guests. "Please, take me home."
Before she could take another step, thirty-six-year-old Ryan Hale lunged from the crowd. His tailored suit pulled tight as his fingers clamped around Emily’s upper arm, violently jerking her backward.
"You're not going anywhere," Ryan snapped under his breath. He looked up, his voice rising in desperate, panicked defense as he met Salvatore’s advancing figure. "She falls. She always blames me. She's clumsy in her condition, Salvatore, you know how she gets!"
Salvatore didn't shout. He didn't rush. He closed the distance with terrifying, unhurried grace.
With one fluid motion, Salvatore’s left hand seized Ryan’s wrist. The crack of bone under pressure sounded like dry timber snapping. Ryan shrieked, his grip instantly breaking as Salvatore tore his son-in-law's hand away from Emily.
Emily stumbled into the safety of her father’s shadow.
Ryan gritted his teeth, desperation overriding his survival instinct. "She's my wife!" he yelled, lunging forward again to snatch her wrist.
Salvatore stepped into the strike. His right fist drove straight into Ryan’s chest with concussive force.
The impact lifted the thirty-six-year-old off his feet, sending him crashing into a champagne tower. Crystal shattered in an explosion of sparkling glass and vintage wine.
Linda screamed, lunging toward Emily with clawed fingers. "You ungrateful little bitch—"
Salvatore didn't even look at her. His hand caught Linda by the shoulder, shoving her backward with disdainful power. She spun across the slick floor, collapsing against an upholstered settee, her pearl necklace scattering across the marble.
Two towering Moretti bodyguards stepped forward, their dark suits parting to reveal shoulder holsters as they formed an iron wall in front of the fallen mother and son.
Emily stood trembling, clutching her father's lapel as her shoulders shook with quiet sobs.
Salvatore looked down at Ryan, who was gasping for breath amidst the broken glass. Salvatore spoke, his voice low, steady, and vibrating with lethal precision.
May you like
"You hid the bruises," Salvatore murmured, his words dropping like lead weights into the dead silence of the hall, "because you knew exactly who would see them."
Ryan looked up from the floor, his face freezing in pure, unadulterated terror.
