Chapter 9

Lily rubbed her bruised elbow, stepping forward cautiously. "From Daddy's study, Mommy. In the secret drawer under his desk. The one with the bronze key."

Daniel gasped, taking a step back toward the wall. "The bronze key... Julian’s private ledger."

"He told me before he went on his last business trip," Lily continued, her sweet voice echoing clearly in the quiet room. "He said, 'If anything happens to me, Lily-bug, make Grandpa a Christmas card on this special paper. Make sure he reads it on Christmas Eve.'"

Richard’s face went entirely white—not the pale of anger, but the translucent, sickening gray of a man who had just looked into his own open grave. "No... that’s impossible. I searched that desk. I tore the entire office apart!"

With steady, deliberate fingers, Emma slipped her fingernail into the sealed seam of the folded card. The adhesive gave way with a crisp, tearing sound.

Inside the handmade card, nestled between Lily’s green crayon trees and gold watercolored bells, was a micro-SD card and a single folded sheet of onionskin paper covered in Julian’s unmistakable, sharp handwriting.

Emma unfolded the paper. Her eyes scanned the first few lines, and a cold, terrible understanding settled over her soul.

"It’s a sworn deposition," Emma whispered, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Notarized by a federal magistrate forty-eight hours before Julian’s crash."

Judge Sterling stepped forward, her professional detachment cracking as she looked over Emma’s shoulder. "What does it say, Emma?"

Emma looked up from the paper, her eyes locking onto Richard with the absolute, pitiless finality of an executioner.

"It says," Emma read slowly, "that Richard Hart and Daniel Hart entered into a conspiracy with the Valenti crime syndicate to launder forty million dollars through the Hart Logistics network. And that on December 20th, Richard Hart paid twenty-five thousand dollars in cash to an auto mechanic in Bridgeport to tamper with the hydraulic brake lines of Julian’s Mercedes."

Daniel screamed—a high-pitched, hysterical shriek of pure terror. "No! No, Dad! You told me you just paid him to steal the laptop! You told me you just wanted the files!"

"You idiot!" Richard roared, lunging toward his son with clawed hands. "Shut your mouth!"

The two deputies moved instantly. They tackled Richard to the hardwood floor, pinning the sixty-six-year-old patriarch amidst the spilled wine and mashed potatoes, twisting his arms behind his back as the steel handcuffs clicked shut with brutal, mechanical finality.
