Chapter 3

The cascading crystal chandeliers seemed to dim under the suffocating weight of the silence. The elite guests of the Kingsley syndicate—captains of industry, politicians, and hardened enforcers—sat frozen in their champagne velvet chairs. No one dared to take a breath, let alone speak.
Claudia’s diamond earrings caught the light as she trembled, her perfectly manicured hands gripping the silk of her sculpted gown. "Damon, please," she whispered, her voice cracking under the intense pressure of his stare. "The boy is confused. He's still grieving. You know how vivid a child's imagination can be."
"Do you expect me to believe my son imagined the bruise on my housemaid's arm, Claudia?" Damon asked, his deep voice carrying a dark, oceanic calm.
"She did that to herself!" Claudia cried out, taking a desperate half-step forward. "She’s trying to sabotage us, Damon! She’s been poisoning Eli’s mind against me since the day we got engaged! She wants you for herself!"
Damon did not blink. He slowly turned his head to scan the long dining table, his perceptive eyes locking onto the faces of his most trusted lieutenants.
"Will you all leave my home immediately?" Damon asked.
It was phrased as a polite inquiry, but the men in the room recognized it as an absolute, non-negotiable command. The scraping of heavy velvet chairs against the polished marble floor echoed like thunder. The guests moved with quiet, terrifying urgency, abandoning their expensive champagne and white roses, desperate to escape the blast radius of Damon Kingsley’s wrath.
Within minutes, the grand dining hall was entirely empty, save for Damon, Claudia, Lena, and little Eli. The heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving them isolated in the golden warmth of the room.
"Are we alone now, Claudia?" Damon inquired, turning his full, devastating attention back to his fiancée.
"Damon, you are humiliating me!" Claudia shouted, her fear rapidly transforming into defensive anger. "My father will not stand for this! The Voss family brought peace to your southern territories, and this is how you treat me? Over a lying servant?"
"Is your father’s territory worth the blood of the people under my roof?" Damon asked, stepping slowly toward her. His polished leather shoes made no sound on the marble.
Lena instinctively knelt beside Eli, wrapping her arms protectively around the boy's shoulders. She could feel the violent trembling in his small frame, and she pressed a gentle kiss to his hair to soothe him.
"She is nothing!" Claudia shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at Lena. "I am going to be your wife! I am the mother of this house now! You need me!"

"Do I look like a man who needs a monster in my home?" Damon asked, stopping just inches from her. The refined tattoos on his hands flexed as he adjusted the cuffs of his dark three-piece suit.
Claudia shrank back, her chest heaving as the reality of her shattered engagement finally set in.
