Chapter 2

The ambient hum of the crowded dining room continued for a fleeting second, completely unaware of the silent storm brewing at the head of the table. Lena froze, her heart hammering against her ribs as she realized Eli had seen the bruise. She hastily pulled her sleeve down, her hands shaking slightly against the crisp white fabric of her apron.

Damon did not look at his fiancée. His cold, perceptive gaze shifted away from Claudia’s triumphant smile and locked directly onto the housemaid.

Lena looked directly at Damon, forced to hold his unwavering, terrifying gaze.

"Lena, why is he trembling?"

Damon's voice was deep, quiet, and deliberate. The sheer gravity of his tone cut through the ambient noise of the banquet like a perfectly sharpened blade. Instantly, every guest stopped eating and speaking. The gentle clinking of silverware against porcelain vanished. The entire room turned toward the head of the table, the silence stretching out like a suffocating blanket.

Lena’s lips drew together. Her soft, expressive eyes briefly filled with unshed tears before she steadies her breathing. The power dynamic of the room rested entirely on her slender shoulders, and the weight of the mafia boss's stare demanded absolute truth.

Maintaining intense eye contact with Damon, Lena answered softly, her voice barely above a whisper yet carrying clearly in the dead silence of the room.

"She made him rehearse it."

Her inner brows lifted helplessly, a silent plea for understanding. After speaking, she lowered her chin slightly, genuinely frightened by what telling him this truth might bring upon her and the boy she had sworn to protect.

Damon moved with lethal, unhurried grace. He stepped smoothly between Claudia and both Lena and Eli, effectively shielding the housemaid and his son behind the broad, impenetrable wall of his tailored suit.

Claudia, realizing the narrative was slipping from her grasp, met his eyes and gave a small, indulgent smile.

"Some children just need encouragement," Claudia said. Her voice was gently reassuring, dripping with a practiced, aristocratic warmth, but her eyes desperately searched his stoic expression for agreement.

Damon watched her without nodding, his face an unreadable mask of cold calculation. Behind him, Eli looked around his father’s powerful shoulder, his wide eyes fixed on the woman in the sapphire silk gown.

Holding Claudia’s gaze, Eli asked in a small, uncertain voice:

"Will you stop hurting Lena now?"

The boy's fingers remained clenched tightly against his waistcoat as he waited in agonizing suspense for the promised answer.

Claudia’s indulgent smile stayed for a fraction of a second, frozen in sheer panic, before it faded completely. The blood drained from her fair skin. Her eyes darted frantically toward Damon.

His gaze settled on her, cold, unwavering, and utterly terrifying. Lena remained beside him, fighting back tears of relief and fear. Every guest at the table stayed completely silent, facing Damon, waiting for the empire to fracture.
