Chapter 4

The silence in the pavilion was absolute, broken only by the soft, pathetic groaning of Troy from the floor. The bright, cinematic lighting illuminated the stark contrast between the elegant setting and the violent reality of the Caruso family. Selene stood motionless, her cold, calculating eyes sweeping over the remnants of the Drake family.

Keira, driven by a sudden, irrational surge of panic and vindictive fury, made a catastrophic mistake. Realizing that her brother was incapacitated and that Selene was a terrifying physical threat, Keira’s eyes darted toward the east wing hallway where the nanny had taken Bennett. In a desperate, unhinged bid for leverage, Keira stepped aggressively over the rolling ribbon spools, reaching her manicured hands out, intending to run past Selene and grab the child.

"I'll take the boy!" Keira shrieked, her American accent cracking with hysteria. "You have no legal right to him without Troy!"

Selene did not raise her voice. She did not even fully turn her body.

As Keira lunged past her, Selene’s left hand shot out with blinding speed. She caught Keira’s extended forearm in a vice-like grip, halting the thirty-two-year-old woman’s momentum instantly. Keira let out a sharp gasp of pain as Selene’s fingers dug into her flesh.

With a brutal, effortless twist of her wrist, Selene wrenched Keira’s arm, forcing her to spin violently away from the hallway. Simultaneously, Selene swept her polished leather shoe across the floor, knocking Keira’s leading foot entirely out from under her.

Deprived of her balance and spun entirely out of control, Keira fell backward. She crashed catastrophically into the massive stack of empty, brightly colored gift boxes that had been arranged near the carousel.

The heavy cardboard buckled and crushed beneath her weight. Lids tumbled chaotically across the pristine floor. Loose, vibrant tissue paper spilled out in a massive cloud, raining down into Keira’s lap as she collapsed awkwardly onto the floor, her expensive dress tangled around her legs. She lay in the ruins of the fake presents, whimpering in pain and profound humiliation.

Opal, witnessing the systematic, effortless dismantling of her children, retreated entirely. The sixty-one-year-old woman scrambled backward until her spine hit the padded bench, her fair, rosy face drained of all color. She realized with horrifying clarity that they had walked into the lion's den believing they could tame the beast.

There was no dialogue. The sheer, physical dominance of Selene Caruso was undeniable.

At a subtle nod from Selene, the heavily armed bodyguards in the room finally moved. They stepped forward in unison, forming an impenetrable, human wall of tailored suits and lethal intent. They positioned themselves squarely between the cowering Drake family and the hallway where the nanny was holding Bennett, ensuring that the child was completely insulated from the traitors.

Selene did not look at the bodyguards. She slowly walked toward the center of the room, her eyes fixed on the discarded paper crown resting on the floor. She knelt gracefully, picking up the crushed, colorful paper. The bright light caught the elegant lines of her face as she slowly, meticulously straightened the folded edge of the crown, her mind calculating the true depth of the betrayal that had just occurred.
