Chapter 3

The immediate danger had passed, but the tension on the terrace hung in the air like thick, suffocating smoke. The nearby guests had backed away, forming a wide, terrified semi-circle around the Voss family. The bright, cheerful colors of the outdoor reception now felt grotesque against the cold reality of what had just occurred.

Juniper slowly pulled her head back from Corbin’s neck. Her small hands reached up, her fingers gripping the fitted fabric of his sleeve with desperate, white-knuckled strength. She looked directly into his eyes. Her gaze was not just frightened; it held a profound, deeply rooted terror that twisted a knife straight into Corbin’s heart.

"Aunt Tabitha takes it every time you leave," Juniper whispered.

The words were so small, so fragile, yet they hit Corbin with the concussive force of an explosive device. He froze, his hands lingering on her arms. He stared into his daughter’s wide, tear-filled eyes, his mind struggling to process the sheer magnitude of the confession.

"What did you say, little bird?" Corbin asked, his voice cracking, entirely stripped of its usual commanding resonance.

"Every time you leave the house," Juniper repeated, a frightened whisper that barely carried over the rustling leaves. "She comes into my room. She takes the pouch. She says I have to practice holding my breath until you come back. She says if I tell you, you won't love me anymore because I'm broken."

Corbin felt the earth tilt on its axis. The blood roared in his ears, a deafening cascade of rage and betrayal. This was not an isolated incident of cruelty. This was systemic, calculated torture inflicted upon a defenseless toddler by his own blood relative. He slowly turned his head, his gray eyes locking onto Tabitha with a look of absolute, murderous intent.

Before Corbin could rise to his feet to execute the promise he had just made, the crowd parted.

Willa Hart stepped forward. At twenty-eight, she possessed a striking, effortless beauty that rivaled any movie star, her fair skin and bright eyes standing out even among the elite attendees. She wore casual, understated family-party clothing, but her posture was rigid with adrenaline. In her hands, she tightly gripped a sleek smartphone.

"Excuse me," Willa said, her voice shaking but laced with an urgent, undeniable resolve.

Corbin looked at her, his protective instincts flaring as he shielded Juniper behind his broad shoulder. "Who are you? Back away."

"My name is Willa," she said, taking another step forward despite the terrifying aura radiating from the mafia boss. She held the smartphone out, the screen dark but ready. "I recorded what happened before you got here."

Corbin’s eyes darted from the phone to Willa’s face. He saw no deception in her expression, only genuine, horrified urgency.

"Show me," Corbin commanded.
