Chapter 11

Jessamine eventually met the woman who ran the children’s home where she once lived.

Not the same director.

The place still existed under another name.

I learned because she wrote me one letter after a year.

Not apology.

Update.

She had spent decades imagining the home as proof nobody wanted her.

When she visited, she discovered old intake notes.

Not legal secrets.

Simple observations.

Jessie likes yellow crayons.

Jessie sleeps holding one sock.

Jessie asks every morning whether her mother called.

Human details.

Not trash.

Not charity.

Child.

She wrote:

I thought being adopted began when the Vanes chose me. I forgot I existed before their choice.

That mattered.

Tobin existed before me too.

My adoption did not create him.

It changed our relationship.

Important.

Then:

I treated Tobin as though your choice was the only thing making him valuable. That was what I had believed about myself.

There.

The deepest truth.

I kept the letter.

Not for Tobin.

May you like

Mine.

He did not owe her psychological education.
