Chapter 6

The locked room held another secret.
A baby monitor sat behind a stack of blankets.
Not facing a crib.
Facing the bed.
I asked why.
Linda said:
“For safety.”
Again.
That word.
I turned the monitor on.
The parent unit was in Linda’s purse.
She had been listening.
Not only when Emily was locked in the room.
At night.
During calls.
Whenever Emily thought she was alone.
I looked at her.
“You listened to my daughter?”
“She talked about leaving.”
“So?”
“She was carrying my grandson.”
There it was.
Possession.
Not concern.
Emily looked at her.
“He’s my son.”
Linda’s expression sharpened.
“He is a Cole.”
“And a Bennett.”
Ryan flinched.
Interesting.
Emily saw it too.
I asked:
“Is that the problem?”
Ryan said nothing.
Linda did.
“Your family swallows everything.”
I almost laughed.
“You came to me asking for a council seat.”
“That’s different.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You want Bennett power without Bennett identity.”
Silence.
The unborn child had become another battlefield.
Ryan wanted the boy publicly Cole.
Privately useful as my grandson.
Linda wanted access to Bennett protection without accepting Emily’s connection to me.
They wanted my blood.
Not my influence.
My daughter.
Not my daughter’s voice.
I understood the structure now.
The room was not only for punishment.
It was for separation.
Every night Emily was locked away, Ryan and Linda strengthened the story that she was unstable, dependent, difficult.
Every call they intercepted made that story easier to believe.

They were not just controlling her behavior.
They were rewriting who she was.
