Chapter 14

Emily moved back to my house.

Not into her childhood room.

I offered the west guest suite.

She changed it.

Different furniture.

Different curtains.

No memories of being sixteen.

She needed somewhere that belonged to who she was now.

The first week, she locked the bedroom door while sleeping.

Then woke up terrified because a locked door felt wrong.

The next night, she left it open.

Then hated that too.

Healing rarely follows symbolism correctly.

Eventually she installed a lock she controlled from inside.

That worked.

Choice changed the meaning.

I noticed she kept the brass key from the apartment on her dresser.

“Why?”

She touched it once.

“I don’t know.”

“Want me to get rid of it?”

“No.”

So I did not.

That became another lesson.

Not everything painful needs to be destroyed for someone to move forward.
