Chapter 4

The call was supposed to happen three nights earlier.

Emily had been rehearsing it because Ryan made her.

She still remembered the words.

“Dad, Ryan has proven himself. I want you to bring him into the Bennett council.”

I stared at her.

Ryan looked furious.

Not because she said it.

Because she exposed it.

I leaned back.

“That’s what this was about?”

Emily shook her head.

“Not at first.”

Of course.

Nothing begins with the final demand.

Ryan had spent years living beside my name.

At dinners, people asked him what I thought.

At family gatherings, men introduced him as James Bennett’s son-in-law before saying anything about Ryan Cole.

Apparently every introduction felt like an insult.

“He wanted a place that was his,” Emily said.

I understood wanting that.

I did not understand bruising my daughter to get it.

“What did you tell him?”

“That if he wanted your respect, he should talk to you himself.”

For one second, pride almost overwhelmed everything else.

Of course she said that.

“What happened?”

“He grabbed me.”

She looked down at her arm.

“The first bruises were that night.”

Ryan snapped:

“I did not mean to hurt her.”

Emily looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice was soft.

“You meant to stop me from walking away.”

Silence.

Better sentence.

More accurate.

Linda stepped in afterward.

Not to protect Emily.

To explain Ryan.

He was under pressure.

He felt diminished.

He needed his wife beside him.

Then Linda told Emily that powerful marriages survive because wives understand when a husband needs obedience more than agreement.

I stared at her.

“That’s what you taught my daughter?”

Linda raised her chin.

“I taught her loyalty.”

“No.”

Emily finally looked directly at her.

“You taught me that his ambition mattered more than my fear.”

The room went completely still.
