Chapter 11

Elsie met Elise in daylight.

No gray coat.

No hidden passage.

No whispering.

That mattered.

They sat together in the art room.

Elise did not touch her until Elsie moved closer first.

My daughter studied her face openly.

“You’re Mommy sister.”

“Yes.”

“Mommy dead.”

Elise’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“You alive.”

“Yes.”

Elsie nodded.

Clear enough.

Then:

“Sing.”

Elise looked at me.

Not permission.

Warning.

Emotion coming.

I stayed.

She sang the five notes.

Then the next five.

For the first time, I heard the entire lullaby since Marina died.

I had forgotten the ending.

Elsie listened.

Then joined badly.

Wrong pitch.

Too loud.

Perfect.

Nadine heard from the hallway during her first supervised visit weeks later.

She stopped.

Did not enter.

Elsie saw her.

“Aunt Nadine.”

My aunt’s face changed.

Not Grandma.

Not second mother.

Aunt Nadine.

A smaller title.

More accurate.

Maybe painful.

She deserved accuracy.

Elsie asked:

“Want hear?”

Nadine nodded.

Elise sang again.

For a moment, two women who had spent years representing opposite versions of Marina stood in the same room.

One protected Marina’s wishes by staying away too long.

One violated them by staying too close.

Neither got to claim moral purity.

That helped me.

Families heal badly when everyone needs one villain and one saint.

Afterward Nadine apologized to Elise for blocking contact.

Elise answered:

“You don’t get those years back.”

No forgiveness.

Not yet.

Then:

May you like

“But you can stop taking new ones.”

Better.
