Chapter 9

Hugo stepped over their bodies, his angular face a mask of cold, calculating wrath. The threat was eliminated. The estate was secure.
He walked back to the master suite, his broad shoulders finally relaxing a fraction of an inch. He knocked twice on the heavy oak door.
"Are you ready to open the door, Giselle?" Hugo asked softly.
The deadbolt clicked, and the door opened. Giselle stood there, still gripping the heavy pistol, her chest heaving. When she saw Hugo standing there, unharmed, she let out a shattered breath of relief and lowered the weapon.
"It's over," Hugo said quietly, stepping into the room and taking the gun from her shaking hands. He engaged the safety and set it on a nearby dresser.
"Are they all gone?" Giselle whispered, her delicate cheekbones pale in the lamplight.
"Do you believe any man who crossed my threshold tonight survived to tell the tale?" Hugo inquired, his cold eyes softening completely as he looked down at her.
He reached out, his tattooed hands gently framing her softly contoured face. His thumbs brushed lightly over her fair, rosy skin, wiping away a smear of soot. The immense violence of the night faded into the background, leaving only the profound, magnetic pull between them.
"You risked everything for me," Giselle said, her voice cracking.
"Did you think I would allow the woman who saved my pride to remain a servant in my home?" Hugo asked, a flicker of profound, protective warmth entering his perceptive eyes. "Are you ready to leave this uniform behind?"
Giselle looked down at her black maid dress, the white apron stained and ruined from the siege. She looked back up at the towering, terrifying man who was offering her a place in his dangerous, blood-soaked world. She was no longer just a housemaid; she was a protector, a survivor, and the woman who had captured the heart of a mafia king.
"What happens now?" Giselle asked softly, leaning into the warmth of his hands.
"Shall we go rebuild our empire?" Hugo asked.
Before she could answer, Hugo leaned down, capturing her lips in a fierce, demanding kiss that sealed her fate to his forever. The war was over, but the reign of the new queen of the Fairholt syndicate had just begun.
The morning sun cast a cold, pale light over the shattered glass and scarred marble of the Fairholt estate. The air still smelled faintly of cordite and smoke, a lingering ghost of the violence that had claimed the night. But inside the grand ballroom, where the chaos had first been ignited, a strange, profound peace had settled. The velvet chairs were righted, the debris swept away, and the fortress stood unbowed.
Hugo stood by the tall, repaired windows of his private study, gazing out over the sprawling grounds. He had changed into a fresh, immaculate dark three-piece suit, his powerful shoulders carrying the weight of his newly solidified empire. The extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble on his jawline perfectly framed his cold, observant eyes as he listened to Marcus’s final casualty report.
"Are the remaining Falcone territories completely under our control, Marcus?" Hugo asked, not turning away from the glass.
"Yes, Boss," Marcus grunted, shifting his weight. "The capos surrendered at dawn. The entire eastern seaboard is yours now. And Casper... the commission has washed their hands of him. They leave his fate entirely to you."

"Do you believe they will show him any mercy if I fail to make an example of him?" Hugo inquired, his deep voice dropping to a terrifying, satisfied rumble.
"Not a chance in hell, sir," Marcus replied grimly.
