Chapter 2

The sting on Hugo’s fair cheek was a glaring contrast to the immaculate, pristine elegance of the ballroom. The laughter of his traitorous relatives continued to ripple through the velvet chairs, a sickening soundtrack to his public execution of character. The bodyguards maintained their iron grip on his biceps, waiting for Casper’s next command.
The gentle pressure of Giselle's napkin against his skin grounded Hugo in a way he hadn't anticipated. The cold, calculating machinery of his mind paused for a fraction of a second as he absorbed the sheer vulnerability and reckless bravery shining in her eyes. The bright, cinematic lighting of the ballroom caught the natural, rosy flush on her delicate cheekbones, contrasting sharply with the pale, terrified set of her mouth.
"You shouldn't be here, Giselle," Hugo warned quietly, his voice pitched so only she could hear over the ambient noise. "Step back. They will not hesitate to hurt you."
Giselle shook her head slightly, her hand remaining steadfastly near his face. "I won't let them do this to you, Mr. Fairholt," she breathed, her gaze darting nervously toward Casper.
Casper noticed the whispered exchange. His face twisted with absolute disgust. The fact that his younger cousin, the supposed terror of the syndicate, was finding comfort in the presence of a lowly servant infuriated him. It ruined the narrative of total dominance he was trying to project to the commission members seated around the banquet tables.
"Get this girl out of my sight," Casper snapped, leaning close to Hugo’s face, deliberately invading his physical space.
Giselle did not retreat. She held her ground, an impenetrable shield of black and white lace, protecting the king from the traitor.
"Your men take orders from me now," Casper smirked, his eyes filled with a manic, victorious glee. "The entire perimeter is secured by my loyalists. You have nothing left, Hugo. Not a single gun in this room will fire for you."
"Is loyalty so easily bought, Casper, or simply rented for the evening?" Hugo asked quietly, his observant eyes piercing through his older cousin's bravado.
The taunt worked. Casper snarled, raising his hand toward Hugo’s face again, preparing to deliver a second, more devastating strike to shatter the younger man's composure.
Giselle saw the approaching blow. She saw the aggressive shift in Casper's shoulders.
She did not scream. She did not plead for mercy. Driven by an instinctual, protective fire that overrode her terror, Giselle stepped smoothly and deliberately between them. Her flat shoes provided perfect traction on the marble floor.
Before Casper’s hand could begin its descent, Giselle lunged forward. She drove one forceful, devastating headbutt directly into the center of Casper’s face.
The sickening crunch of cartilage was loud and utterly unexpected. Casper let out a strained, breathless cry of pain. His eyes watered instantly as blood poured from his ruined nose. He recoiled violently, clutching his face with both hands, and staggered backward.
Unable to maintain his balance, Casper crashed heavily against a nearby banquet table. Crystal glasses rattled, and a heavy silver ice bucket tipped over, sending ice scattering across the immaculate floor.
The sudden, brutal violence perpetrated by a housemaid shattered the atmosphere of the room. The bodyguards, trained to react to threats, instantly released Hugo's arms and stepped swiftly between the gasping Casper and Giselle, their hands hovering near their concealed weapons.
The mocking laughter of the guests died instantly. The clinking of crystal and the soft hum of conversation evaporated. Dozens of powerful, dangerous adults froze, staring in utter disbelief at the beautiful woman in the black maid dress who had just crippled a senior syndicate boss with a single strike.
Giselle did not press her attack. She immediately retreated, turning her back on the armed guards, and returned directly to Hugo’s side. She gently supported his elbow, her breathing shallow and frantic. Her eyes were wet with unshed tears, and her delicate fingers shook violently against the dark wool of his suit.

Hugo looked at her, his observant eyes wide with a mixture of shock and profound respect. The quiet, unspoken affection they had shared in stolen glances over the past year had just crystallized into something unbreakable.
"My phone, Giselle," Hugo said quietly, looking directly at her, his voice perfectly calm despite the chaos erupting around them.
