Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a warm, decadent golden light across the gilded ceiling moldings and ivory-paneled walls of Quentin Vale’s sprawling mansion. The grand dining room was a theater of immense wealth and quiet, lethal power. Tall candles glowed fiercely in heavy silver candelabras, their flickering flames reflecting off pristine white roses, fine porcelain, and crystal stemware. Polished walnut tables stretched across the expanse, flanked by champagne velvet chairs occupied by the city’s most dangerous men and their adorned wives. Generous illumination clearly revealed every face, highlighting the fair, rosy skin of the American elite who ruled the underground.

Standing silently near the heavy silk curtains was Holly Mercer. Beautiful like a classic movie star, her softly heart-shaped face and delicate cheekbones were framed by dark hair arranged in a loose, elegant braided chignon. Her slender figure and graceful posture were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. Her neatly tied white apron, collar, and cuffs were immaculate.

Holly’s expressive brows were drawn together in deep, concealed distress. Her eyes were fixed on the head table.

Quentin Vale sat at the center of the room. He was a mafia boss who commanded the room without lifting a finger. Handsome like a movie star, his broad, powerful shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit flawlessly. His angular face, defined by a high-bridged nose and a sharply defined jaw, was shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly across his forehead. His cold, perceptive eyes missed nothing. Refined artistic tattoos across his hands and fingers, generously spaced, caught the light as he occasionally adjusted his wristwatch or turned his family signet ring. A small neck tattoo peeked just above his collar.

"The wine is excellent tonight, isn't it?" whispered another maid, pausing beside Holly.

"It is," Holly murmured quietly, her eyes darting back to the table. "But I need to get back to Finn. He needs me."

Beside Quentin sat his seven-year-old son, Finn. The boy was dressed impeccably in a cream shirt, a dark waistcoat, and polished shoes. Yet, the child looked entirely hollow, his fair skin pale with silent terror. Earlier that evening, a minor accident had occurred—a spilled glass of water. Holly had rushed to clean it, but Bianca Ashford, Quentin’s fiancée, had gotten to the boy first.

Bianca sat opposite the boy now, draped in a sculpted garnet satin gown that caught the golden light like fresh blood. Diamond earrings flashed at her neck, competing with the heavy engagement ring on her finger. She possessed elegant manners and a carefully reassuring public smile. But Holly knew the truth. She had seen Bianca drag Finn into the antechamber.

"You will learn to sit still, you little brat," Bianca had hissed earlier, out of Quentin's sight.

"Please, Bianca, I'm sorry," Finn had cried.

Holly had watched in horror as Bianca produced a thick length of satin ribbon, binding the child's wrists together with vicious force before throwing a linen napkin over his lap to conceal the cruelty. "Your father ordered this. If you show him, he will lock you in the cellar," Bianca had lied.

Now, Holly stood with a pair of small, sharp sewing scissors concealed in the pocket of her apron. The tension in her chest was suffocating. She could not let the boy suffer any longer. Taking a deep, trembling breath, Holly stepped away from the silk curtains and began her agonizingly long walk toward the head of the table.
