Chapter 1

The dining room of the Westbrook mansion was a blinding display of orchestrated opulence, a space designed specifically to overwhelm the senses. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the vaulted ceiling, casting a soft, elegant golden light across the gilded moldings and the ivory-paneled walls. The warm illumination danced across the ornate marble fireplace, illuminating the room so perfectly that not a single shadow dared to cling to the corners. Dozens of tall candles glowed steadily in heavy silver candelabras, their flames reflecting off crystal stemware, gold-rimmed porcelain, and the polished walnut tables. A sea of white roses filled the centerpieces, releasing a heavy, sweet fragrance into the air. Seated in champagne-colored velvet dining chairs were the most powerful figures of the American underworld, their fair, rosy skin glowing with health and untouchable privilege.
"The catering tonight is absolutely flawless, wouldn't you agree?" murmured a senator’s wife, adjusting her diamond necklace.
"It is nothing short of perfection," her husband replied, taking a sip from his crystal glass. "Westbrook leaves nothing to chance."
At the head of the main table sat Dorian Westbrook, the forty-four-year-old Mafia boss who commanded the room with an effortless, terrifying gravity. He was handsome as a classic movie star, possessing broad, powerful shoulders that perfectly filled out his tailored midnight-blue three-piece suit. His face was a study in masculine angles, marked by a high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jaw, and extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was swept naturally back, though a few loose strands fell casually over his forehead. His cold, perceptive eyes surveyed the room. Refined artistic tattoos decorated his hands and fingers, utilizing generous negative space, matching a small, elegant neck tattoo visible above his collar. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand, resting near his polished wristwatch.
Standing proudly beside his neighboring chair was Felicia Crane, his thirty-three-year-old fiancée. She wore a sculpted satin evening gown that hugged her slender figure, her diamond earrings flashing violently in the light.
"Is the evening progressing to your satisfaction, Dorian?" Felicia asked smoothly, her American accent dripping with practiced, aristocratic charm. "I instructed the staff to ensure the pacing was impeccable."
"Does a seamless dinner require the sacrifice of humanity to function properly?" Dorian asked in return, his deep, low voice rolling through the space. His dialogue consisted exclusively of questions, a long-standing, chilling habit that forced everyone around him into a constant state of defense.

"I hardly think humanity is at stake over a delayed dessert course," Felicia laughed softly, though her eyes narrowed slightly. "We must maintain standards."
"Are standards maintained through cruelty, Felicia?" Dorian inquired, his cold eyes shifting away from her. He looked toward the swinging doors of the kitchen, where a slender figure in a sophisticated black maid dress was preparing to enter the luminous, crowded room.
