Chapter 7

The tender sanctuary of the study was abruptly shattered by a sharp, urgent knock on the heavy oak door. Naomi gasped, pulling back from Damon’s embrace. She hastily wiped the tears from her rosy skin, smoothing her white apron and realigning her ruffled headband, instantly reverting to the posture of a sophisticated maid.

Damon rose to his feet with fluid, predatory grace. The warmth in his eyes hardened back into cold, unforgiving steel. He adjusted the cuffs of his dark three-piece suit, the small artistic neck tattoo shifting as he turned toward the door.

“Will you enter, Silas?” Damon asked.

The door swung open to reveal Silas, Damon’s most trusted lieutenant. The man was breathless, his face grim under the warm glow of the study lamps. He stepped into the room, his eyes darting briefly to Naomi before locking onto his boss.

“Boss, we have a massive problem,” Silas said, his voice tense. “The Whitlocks were alerted. Sabine’s driver saw us dragging her to the cells, and he made a call before we could stop him. Marcus Whitlock is mobilizing his entire crew.”

“Did they honestly think I would quietly endure her insolence under my own roof?” Damon asked, his broad shoulders squaring.

“Marcus is demanding her immediate release, Boss,” Silas continued, stepping closer. “He says if Sabine isn’t walked out to the front gates in the next twenty minutes, the alliance is permanently dead. He’s threatening full-scale war. He says he’ll wipe out every man in this compound.”

Naomi’s breath caught in her throat. She stood up, her delicate features twisted in terror. The reality of the mafia world was crashing down on her. A war meant bloodshed. It meant Damon risking his life, his empire, everything he had built, over a maid’s broken heart.

“Mr. Hartwell, you have to let her go,” Naomi pleaded, stepping toward him. “Please. You cannot start a war over me. I am just a servant. It’s not worth dying for.”

Damon turned to look at her. The clean, clear lighting of the study cast a gentle golden highlight across his angular face.

“Do you place so little value on your own heart, Naomi?” Damon asked, his deep voice carrying a profound, immovable weight.

“It’s just an empty locket now, Damon,” Naomi whispered, her voice cracking as she used his first name, desperate to make him understand. “Let her go. Please.”

Damon stepped closer to her, his gaze unwavering. “Would you have me trade the woman I love for the fleeting illusion of peace with a monster?”

Naomi froze, her expressive eyes wide. Silas cleared his throat uncomfortably, realizing he was witnessing a confession that altered the entire hierarchy of the syndicate.

“Are the men arming themselves at the perimeter, Silas?” Damon asked, not looking away from Naomi.

“Yes, Boss. We’re locking it down,” Silas confirmed.
