Chapter 1

The engagement dinner inside Damon Hartwell’s sprawling mansion was a breathtaking display of wealth and warmth. Bright, airy, and luminous colors filled the vast space, radiating a soft, elegant warmth that seemed to make the very air glow. Clear lighting with a slightly warm white balance poured from the tiered crystal chandeliers suspended above, casting gentle golden highlights across the carved walnut furniture and cream marble floors. There was no heavy yellow cast, nor any muddy orange or dark tones; sufficient illumination clearly revealed the entire room, bathing the fair, rosy skin of the white American guests in a natural, flawless light.

At the head of the table sat Damon Hartwell. At thirty-two, the mafia boss was undeniably handsome, his broad shoulders filling out a tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face, sharply defined jaw, and neatly trimmed stubble gave him a formidable, commanding presence, while his swept-back hair added a touch of classic refinement. The small, artistic tattoo on his neck peeked above his crisp collar, matching the generously spaced ink that decorated his hands and fingers. A heavy signet ring and an expensive wristwatch glinted in the warm light.

To his left sat his fiancée, Sabine Whitlock. Twenty-nine years old and dressed in a champagne satin evening gown, she wore dazzling diamond earrings that caught the chandelier’s glow. But it was the jewelry resting against her chest that drew the eye—a small, hinged gold locket, held open in her fingers. The hollow compartment inside was visibly empty.

Naomi Brooks, a twenty-five-year-old maid, moved gracefully toward the head table. She was beautiful and gentle, her delicate features and expressive eyes framed by fair, rosy skin. Her hair was gathered into a loose low bun beneath a white ruffled maid headband. Her sophisticated black maid dress featured a cinched waist, a short A-line skirt, and pristine clean whites on her apron, collar, and cuffs.

Naomi finished placing a fine porcelain plate before Damon. As she pulled her hand back, she noticed the open locket in Sabine’s fingers. Naomi became instantly, horrifyingly still.

Damon, highly observant of the quiet, mutual affection they secretly shared, followed Naomi’s gaze. He looked directly at the trembling maid, his deep, low, measured voice cutting through the ambient chatter.

“Naomi. Isn’t that your locket?”

Every dinner guest stopped eating and speaking, the clinking of polished silverware halting as they turned toward Damon’s dining chair.

Sabine met Damon’s gaze with a faint, reassuring smile, unbothered by the sudden, suffocating silence in the room. After speaking, she directed a brief, vicious warning glance toward Naomi.

“Naomi gave it to me,” Sabine lied smoothly, her American accent dripping with false sweetness.

Naomi’s expressive eyes lingered on the empty compartment of the locket before slowly returning to Damon. She drew a small, unsteady breath. Heavy tears gathered without falling, shimmering in the golden light.

“My son’s ashes were inside,” Naomi whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of her grief.

Damon’s expression tightened instantly. He rose to his full height beside Naomi, reaching out with his tattooed hand to gently steady her trembling fingers against the table. He looked directly at Sabine. Sabine’s smile weakened and faltered beneath Damon’s silent, crushing scrutiny.

Sabine closed the empty locket with a small, sharp click. She looked directly at Damon, dismissing Naomi’s profound grief with quiet impatience.

“I washed that dirt away,” Sabine stated.

Damon briefly looked toward Naomi with restrained tenderness. Slowly, his eyes shifted toward Sabine, followed by a slow, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw tightened. His stare became cold, unwavering, and utterly terrifying.
