Chapter 3

The air in the ballroom seemed to evaporate. The natural, bright lighting cast sharp, uncompromising shadows across Helena’s terrified face. She continued to back away, her expensive heels clicking erratically against the polished marble floor. The realization that her three-year web of lies had just collapsed in front of the entire syndicate paralyzed her.

"Roman, please, let me explain," Helena stammered, her hands trembling as she clutched her heavy pearl necklace. "It is not what it looks like. They are extorting us."

Roman did not speak. He did not yell. He took a slow, measured step forward. His polished leather shoes made no sound, but the sheer, overwhelming masculine danger radiating from his tailored three-piece suit forced the surrounding guests to step back in silent horror.

"She is a liar, Roman!" Helena shrieked, panic entirely consuming her aristocratic facade. Desperate to regain control of the narrative, she lunged forward again. Helena suddenly reached toward Sophie, her manicured claws aiming to grab the child and drag her away from Roman's line of sight. "You little brat, keep your mouth shut!"

Roman’s reaction was explosive and blindingly fast.

He intercepted her hand in mid-air, his tattooed fingers clamping around his mother's wrist with the crushing force of a steel vice. He tore her arm away from his daughter. Without a single fraction of hesitation, Roman pulled his other hand back and delivered one powerful, devastating open-handed slap directly across Helena’s face.

The sound cracked like a gunshot over the ambient noise of the gala.

The kinetic force of the blow lifted the sixty-seven-year-old woman completely off balance. She staggered violently backward, her luxurious formal gown twisting around her legs. She crashed heavily against the wooden registration table, sending guest lists, crystal vases, and silver pens scattering across the floor. She collapsed against the mahogany wood, holding her rapidly bruising cheek, gasping for breath in total, humiliated shock.

No dialogue was spoken. The music in the ballroom seemed to fade into a dull, distant hum. The capos, the donors, and the elite guests stood frozen in absolute silence. A mafia boss striking the matriarch of his own family in public was an unprecedented, earth-shattering event.

Roman did not adjust his suit. He did not look at the shocked crowd. He slowly turned his back on his mother and knelt down on the hard marble floor. He reached out with hands that had ended lives and built an empire, and gently placed Sophie safely beside him, shielding the crying child behind his broad, muscular frame.

He stood back up, his chest rising and falling with a slow, terrifying rhythm. His deep, intimidating eyes locked directly onto his mother, pinning her against the ruined registration table like a butterfly on a board.

"I've sent fifty thousand every month," Roman said. His voice was dead calm. He spoke in a low, menacing voice, pausing deliberately between his words. "Tell me. Where it went."

Helena went completely pale, her eyes wide as she became utterly, genuinely frightened of the monster she had raised.
