Chapter 9

Cora had one more video.

She almost deleted it.

Thank God she did not.

Miles and Evelyn stood alone on the court after Hazel left.

Miles said:

“She’s not adjusting.”

Evelyn answered:

“Then Sophie becomes easier.”

My jaw tightened.

Miles laughed.

“And Damon?”

“He won’t notice at first.”

I stopped the video.

Everyone in the room went silent.

I restarted it.

Miles:

“He’ll notice when the kid isn’t beside him.”

Evelyn:

“Not if she’s the one refusing events.”

I paused again.

There it was.

They were not simply planning to remove Hazel.

They were planning to make her withdrawal look voluntary.

First create fear.

Then associate public events with humiliation.

Then offer relief.

“You don’t have to attend.”

Eventually people say:

Hazel is shy.

Hazel dislikes crowds.

Hazel prefers the country estate.

Hazel becomes absent by choice.

Sophie becomes present by convenience.

I looked at Evelyn.

“You wanted my daughter to fear family events.”

Her face changed.

“No.”

“Yes.”

I pointed at the screen.

“You were manufacturing the reason she would disappear.”

Miles snapped:

“You’re twisting everything.”

Cora finally turned on him.

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You told me not to comfort Hazel because if she kept crying at events, she’d solve the problem herself.”

Miles stared.

Cora continued.

“You said Evelyn wouldn’t have to send her anywhere if Hazel begged not to come.”

That ended his defense.

No one had twisted the plan.

We had finally translated it.
