Chapter 2

Cora recorded the first video eleven days earlier.

Hazel stood near the baseline while Miles tossed tennis balls at her feet one after another.

Not hard.

Not yet.

Every time Hazel stepped backward, Evelyn told her to return to the line.

When the child cried, Evelyn laughed.

“Again.”

Second video.

Five days later.

The ball machine was running on its lowest setting.

Hazel tried to leave.

Miles blocked the gate.

Cora whispered behind the phone that she wanted to intervene.

Then Evelyn’s voice came through.

“Her father says she needs to stop being delicate.”

I paused the video.

Everyone looked at me.

“I never said that.”

Cora nodded quickly.

“I know now.”

“Why now?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because yesterday Hazel told me you always pick her up when she cries.”

That sentence hurt.

A child had proven my innocence more effectively than my reputation.

I resumed the video.

Evelyn told Hazel that Mafia families do not raise weak girls.

Miles said:

“If she learns fear this young, she’ll embarrass Damon forever.”

I stopped it again.

Evelyn folded her arms.

“You spoil her.”

I stared.

“She is three.”

“You treat her like she might break.”

“No.”

My voice stayed low.

“I treat her like she is three.”

Miles scoffed.

“That’s why she manipulates everyone.”

Hazel looked at him.

Her face changed.

She had heard that sentence before.

I walked toward him.

“How many times have you told her that?”

He said nothing.

Cora answered.

“Every session.”

Manipulates.

Pretends.

Performs.

Delicate.

They had built a vocabulary around Hazel’s fear so nobody needed to call it fear anymore.

Then Cora opened the final video.

This one showed Evelyn removing Hazel’s cardigan before turning the machine on.

“Why?” I asked.

Cora swallowed.

“She said if the balls left marks, the cardigan would hide them afterward.”

That was the moment the engagement ended in my mind long before any formal decision.

May you like

Not because Hazel had been frightened.

Because Evelyn had planned what the evidence would look like afterward.
