Chapter 2

The child’s quiet confession hung in the air, a stark contrast to the surrounding conversations about real estate and political maneuvering. Hannah froze, her breath hitching in her throat. Her bandaged fingers tightened instinctively on the edge of the heavy silver serving tray, a jolt of sharp pain shooting up her arm. She didn't dare look at Sienna.
Garrett, whose situational awareness was legendary, immediately noticed the unnatural tremor in the housemaid’s hands. He turned his head slowly, his cold, observant eyes dropping from her delicate, expressive face down to the stark white bandages wrapped around her fingers.
The artistic tattoos on his own hand flexed as his jaw set into a firm, unyielding line. He met Hannah’s eyes, seeing the raw vulnerability and fear shining in them. The quiet, unspoken affection they shared was built on a foundation of mutual respect, and seeing her injured under his roof ignited a cold, dangerous fury deep within his chest.
"Hannah," Garrett said.
His deep, low voice dropped a full octave, completely bypassing the senator and the capos. He allowed a measured, terrifying pause to linger after her name. The sound was not a shout, but the absolute gravity of his tone commanded immediate silence.
Every single dinner guest stopped eating. Conversations died instantly in the throats of the politicians and mobsters. Dozens of powerful men and women turned their heads toward the head of the table in total, suffocating silence.
"Who hurt your hands?" Garrett asked.
The question was a lethal inquiry, echoing off the gilded wall panels. The bright, cinematic lighting seemed to spotlight the dramatic tableau at the head of the table.
Sienna smoothly adjusted her posture, the burgundy satin of her gown rustling softly against the velvet dining chair. She met Garrett’s intense, unblinking gaze. Her polished, aristocratic smile barely shifted, though a flicker of irritation crossed her fair features at the public interruption.
"Just a cleaning lesson, darling," Sienna answered, her voice smooth and dripping with a condescending, dismissive sweetness. "She was being careless. Servants need to learn the consequences of breaking expensive things."
She offered the lie with effortless perfection, fully expecting Garrett to side with his future bride over a housemaid.
Hannah stood her ground, though her knees felt weak. She looked directly at Garrett. She knew the danger of defying the woman who wore his ring, but looking into his eyes, she found an anchor of absolute safety.
"Sienna forbade the brush," Hannah said quietly. Her voice was fragile but carried a shattering clarity across the silent, opulent room.
A collective, silent gasp seemed to ripple through the velvet dining chairs. The guests stared in unadulterated shock. The implication was horrific—the future matriarch had forced a maid to clean broken glass with her bare hands.
Garrett did not yell. He did not immediately turn to Sienna. Instead, he moved with incredibly gentle, deliberate care. He reached out with his tattooed hands and gently took the heavy silver serving tray from Hannah’s trembling, bandaged grip. He rested the tray silently on the polished walnut table, relieving her of the burden.
Before Sienna could scramble to justify her cruelty, Ben spoke up.
The six-year-old boy in the navy suit looked directly at Sienna. There was no fear in his eyes, only a simple, wounded certainty that exposed the absolute darkness of the woman's actions.
"You made Mommy use bare hands," Ben said.

The use of the word 'Mommy' fell like an executioner's blade. The child had just publicly claimed the housemaid as his true mother figure, while simultaneously condemning the fiancée as an abuser.
Garrett’s eyes briefly softened toward Hannah, a look of profound, quiet tenderness and immense respect. Then, he slowly turned his head toward Sienna. The movement was deliberate and terrifying. His jaw tightened slightly; the muscles ticking beneath his neat stubble. He held Sienna in a cold, unwavering stare, letting the absolute, suffocating silence of the room execute her entirely.
