Chapter 10

The descent into the sub-basement holding cells of the Whitmore estate felt like walking into a tomb. The air grew damp and cold, smelling heavily of earth and iron. The bright, luminous lights of the upper floors were replaced by harsh, flickering fluorescent bulbs.
Garrett walked with measured, deliberate steps, his tailored dark suit a stark contrast to the grim surroundings. Hannah walked beside him, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm. She had insisted on coming, needing to see the resolution of the nightmare she had helped expose.
Marcus stood outside a heavy steel door at the end of the corridor, his arms crossed.
"Is she ready?" Garrett asked quietly.
"She's been screaming for her father for two days, Boss," Marcus grunted, pulling a heavy ring of keys from his belt. "She knows he failed."
Marcus unlocked the heavy deadbolts with a loud, metallic clank and pulled the door open.
Sienna Voss was huddled on a crude metal cot in the corner of the small, concrete cell. The elegant burgundy evening gown she had worn at the dinner was ruined, stained with dirt and sweat. She looked up, her face pale and haggard, the arrogance completely stripped away by the reality of her impending death.
"Garrett," Sienna gasped, scrambling off the cot and falling to her knees on the cold floor. "Please. I was going to be your wife. You can't do this."
Garrett stepped into the cell, his cold, observant eyes fixed on the pathetic figure before him. Hannah remained just outside the door, watching the exchange, her elegant posture unyielding.
"Do you believe wearing my ring grants you immunity from the consequences of child abuse?" Garrett asked, his deep voice echoing in the small, concrete room.
"I was misguided!" Sienna sobbed, holding her hands up in a desperate plea. "I thought you needed a stronger hand with him! I never wanted to hurt him, I just wanted him to respect me!"
"Did you think forcing a woman to bleed for a broken glass and terrorizing a six-year-old were the hallmarks of a good mother?" Garrett inquired, stepping closer, his towering frame casting a long, dark shadow over the kneeling woman. "Did you think I would surrender my son to you?"
"I was wrong!" Sienna wept, grasping at the air near Garrett's polished leather shoes. "Please, spare me! Banish me! I'll leave the country! You'll never see me again!"
Garrett looked down at his former fiancée, completely devoid of empathy. He reached into the inner pocket of his tailored suit jacket and slowly withdrew his suppressed pistol. The dark metal caught the flickering fluorescent light of the cell.
"Do you truly believe a king can leave a monster alive and still command respect from his family?" Garrett asked softly, stepping back slightly to avoid the grasping hands.
Sienna’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror as she stared down the barrel of the gun. She looked past Garrett, her frantic eyes landing on Hannah standing in the doorway.
"You!" Sienna shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at her. "You ruined everything! You are nothing but a servant! A nobody!"
"Is she a servant, Sienna, or is she the woman who will inherit the empire you tried to steal?" Garrett asked, his voice dropping to a lethal, freezing register.
He didn't wait for her to process the words. Garrett raised the weapon and fired a single, precise shot. The suppressed pistol made a sharp, deadly thwip sound in the confined space.
Sienna collapsed backward onto the concrete floor, instantly dead.
Garrett lowered the gun, engaging the safety with a metallic click. He stared at the body for a long moment, the final weight of the betrayal lifting from his broad shoulders. The coup was officially crushed in blood. His son was safe.
He turned away from the cell and walked back out into the corridor, slipping the weapon back into his jacket. He looked at Hannah, searching her expressive eyes for any sign of horror or regret. She had just witnessed an execution at his hand.
"Are you harmed by the truth of what I am, Hannah?" Garrett asked gently, stepping closer to her in the dim light.
"I always knew what you were, Garrett," Hannah whispered, reaching out to gently touch the side of his face. "I am not afraid of the dark, not as long as I am with you."
Garrett’s cold eyes softened completely. He pulled her against his chest, a heavy anchor in the uncertain world they were about to navigate together.
"Shall we leave this darkness behind us, then?" Garrett asked, offering her his arm.
May you like
"I am ready," Hannah answered, taking his arm firmly.
They ascended the stairs, leaving the violence in the cellar, and stepped back into the bright, cinematic light of the main foyer. The mansion was quiet, the immediate threats neutralized, but the echoes of the week's violence were merely the opening notes of a much larger symphony.
