Chapter 8

The transition from housemaid to primary guardian happened with the ruthless, cinematic efficiency that characterized Nathaniel Cross’s entire operation. By the following morning, Lily’s meager belongings had been moved from the cramped staff quarters to a sprawling, luxurious suite on the second floor, connected directly to Sophie’s nursery. The estate manager had immediately disposed of her stiff black and white maid uniforms, replacing them with a wardrobe of elegant, sophisticated clothing befitting a woman of her new station.

Lily spent the first few days navigating the surreal reality of her new life. The crushing fear of the Moretti syndicate that had haunted her for three years began to recede, replaced by the profound, comforting realization that she was living inside the most heavily fortified fortress on the East Coast.

It was a crisp Thursday afternoon. The bright, airy light of the mansion flooded the massive indoor sunroom. Lily was sitting on a plush velvet sofa, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater and tailored trousers. Her hair was still pinned in its elegant twist, but she looked relaxed, vibrant.

Sophie sat on the floor nearby, humming happily as she drew a new picture with her colored pencils. The dark smudge of the eraser from the engagement dinner was entirely forgotten.

The heavy glass doors of the sunroom opened silently.

Nathaniel stepped into the room. He had just returned from a meeting at the ports, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his overcoat draped casually over his powerful shoulders. The extremely short, neat stubble on his jawline caught the sunlight. He looked dangerously handsome, his presence instantly shifting the gravity in the room.

"Daddy!" Sophie squealed, dropping her pencils and scrambling across the rug.

Nathaniel dropped his coat and caught her effortlessly, lifting her high into the air with a deep, rumbling laugh that completely erased his terrifying mafia persona. He kissed her rosy cheek before settling her onto his hip.

"What are you drawing today, little bird?" Nathaniel asked, walking over to the sofa.

"A garden!" Sophie declared proudly, pointing to the messy green scribbles on the paper.

Lily stood up quickly from the sofa, smoothing her trousers out of habit. "Good afternoon, Mr. Cross."

Nathaniel looked at her, his cold, perceptive eyes softening noticeably. The cinematic light caught the delicate slope of her cheekbones.

"We discussed this, Lily," Nathaniel murmured, his deep voice dropping to an intimate register. "You don't need to call me Mr. Cross. We aren't in the dining room."

Lily flushed slightly, a warm pink blooming across her fair skin. "Good afternoon... Nathaniel."

He smiled, a subtle, devastating expression that made her heart flutter erratically. He set Sophie down on the floor. "Go finish your garden, sweetheart. I need to speak with Lily for a moment."

Sophie happily trotted back to her pencils.

Nathaniel turned his full attention back to Lily. He took a slow step closer, invading her personal space just enough to make her breath hitch.

"My intelligence team intercepted a communication this morning," Nathaniel said quietly, ensuring his daughter couldn't hear the violence in his words. "The Moretti family received a tip about a woman matching your description living in my city. They sent a small team of hitters across the border last night to investigate."

The blood drained instantly from Lily’s face. The nightmare had found her. She took a panicked step backward. "Oh my god. I have to leave. I have to pack my things, I can't put Sophie in danger—"

Before she could retreat further, Nathaniel reached out, his strong, tattooed hands gripping her shoulders firmly. The grip was immovable, grounding her instantly in the present.

"You aren't going anywhere, Lily," Nathaniel commanded, his voice a low, terrifying rumble of absolute authority. "I told you that you are under my protection."

"But if they know I'm here—"

"They don't know anything," Nathaniel interrupted smoothly, his thumbs gently stroking her shoulders to calm her panic. "My men intercepted the team before they reached the city limits. The hitters have been permanently dealt with, and a message was sent back to New York. Don Moretti has been explicitly informed that any further incursions into my territory will result in his immediate execution."

Lily stared at him, her chest heaving as she processed the magnitude of what he had done. He hadn't just hidden her; he had actively gone to war with a rival syndicate to keep her safe.
