Chapter 3

The grand dining room was swallowed by a breathless silence. The crystal chandeliers continued to cast their soft golden warmth, but the atmosphere had turned to ice. A direct command from Nathaniel Cross during a formal engagement dinner was an absolute law, and he had just publicly overridden his fiancée's unspoken authority.

Lily remained exactly where she was, standing protectively beside Sophie’s chair. She placed the silver tray down onto a nearby console with trembling hands. She couldn't walk away now.

Nathaniel slowly opened his tattooed hand, resting it palm-up on the table right beside his daughter’s drawing. He didn't say a word, but the quiet authority in the gesture spoke volumes.

Sophie looked at his large, powerful hand. Her small chin trembled, and she slowly opened her tiny fist, dropping the worn pink eraser into his waiting palm. Nathaniel closed his fingers over it.

Lily looked down at the little girl, then slowly raised her gaze to meet Nathaniel’s cold, perceptive eyes.

The barrier between employer and servant vanished entirely in that look. Lily’s expressive inner brows lifted helplessly, conveying a deep sadness. Her lips trembled visibly, and tears gathered rapidly in her eyes, catching the luminous lighting of the room.

"She thinks loving me gets me fired," Lily whispered.

Her voice caught painfully on the word 'loving,' a suppressed sob betraying the deep, genuine bond she had formed with the motherless child. Sophie immediately reached up, her tiny fingers grasping blindly for the crisp white fabric of Lily's apron.

Lily didn't pull away. Ignoring the deadly glare of the woman sitting across the table, she gently covered the child’s small hand with her own, trying desperately to reassure the little girl despite her own overwhelming fear.

"What are you talking about?" Vivienne demanded, her voice rising slightly in pitch as panic began to fracture her polished exterior. "Nathaniel, are you going to allow the help to speak to us like this?"

Nathaniel ignored her completely. He kept his eyes locked on Lily for another long second, registering the absolute truth in her tear-filled eyes, before slowly turning his head back to his daughter.

Sophie wasn't looking at him. She was looking directly across the table at the woman wearing the sculpted satin gown.

"I erased myself," Sophie said, her small voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade. She pointed a tiny, trembling finger at the gray smudge on her drawing. "Is that enough?"

Her chin trembled with a frightened, desperate hope. She truly believed that offering herself as a sacrifice would appease the monster across the table.

Nathaniel slowly, deliberately turned his cold, knowing stare toward his fiancée. The movement was predatory, the quiet shift of a mafia boss realizing a threat was sitting inside his own perimeter.

Vivienne’s polished, confident smile collapsed entirely. Her perfectly painted lips parted, but no explanation came out. She stared back at him, the color draining rapidly from her fair, rosy cheeks. The elite guests remained completely silent, paralyzed by the sheer terror radiating from the head of the table. The silence stretched, agonizing and heavy.
