Chapter 2

The absolute silence in the grand dining room was a physical weight, pressing down on Freya’s chest until she felt she could hardly breathe. The golden light from the tiered crystal chandeliers suddenly felt harsh and exposing. She stood frozen beside the polished walnut table, her hands clutching the crisp white fabric of her apron. She was acutely aware of the hundreds of eyes staring at her, but the only gaze that mattered belonged to the mafia boss sitting in front of her.
Before Freya could force the words past the lump of terror in her throat, Cassandra intervened.
Cassandra smoothly adjusted her posture, the sculpted satin of her evening gown rustling softly against the velvet upholstery. She met Rafael’s stunned, intense gaze with a faint, indulgent smile, projecting the image of a devoted, fiercely protective fiancée attempting to soothe a child's irrational behavior.
"June’s being dramatic, darling," Cassandra said, her voice remaining smoothly reassuring, dripping with manufactured pity.
She offered the lie with effortless, chilling perfection. But her eyes betrayed her. They frantically searched Rafael’s angular face for any sign of agreement, any indication that he would accept her version of reality and dismiss the beautiful housemaid's presence.
Freya refused to back down. She held Rafael’s gaze, moisture gathering rapidly along her lower eyelids. The sheer terror of what she had discovered overrode her fear of the woman in the satin gown.
Rafael rose slowly from his velvet chair. He moved with the predatory, liquid grace of a man who commanded an empire. His broad shoulders completely dominated the space as he stepped around the table. He rested a heavy, reassuring hand on June’s small shoulder, keeping Freya securely beside him and placing his tailored dark suit as a physical barrier between his daughter and Cassandra.
"June thinks being born was wrong," Freya said. Her voice was soft, fragile, but it carried a shattering clarity across the dead silent room.
A collective, silent gasp seemed to ripple through the velvet dining chairs. The guests stared in unadulterated shock. The tragic narrative had always been that Rafael's late wife had died in childbirth, a tragedy that had hardened the mafia boss into the ruthless king he was today. To suggest the child carried the weight of that guilt was an unspeakable tragedy.
The silence stretched, thick and suffocating, until it was broken by the smallest voice in the room.
June, emboldened by the warm, heavy weight of her father's hand on her shoulder, looked directly across the table at Cassandra. The seven-year-old girl’s lower lip trembled violently. Tears gathered along her lower eyelids, catching the golden light of the tall candles.
"You said I killed Mommy," June said.
The words emerged quietly, seeking an explanation rather than throwing an accusation. It was a statement of absolute, irrefutable fact from a child who had been manipulated by a monster in the dark.
Rafael’s cold eyes snapped down to his daughter. He looked at June for one brief, incredibly still beat. The entire room seemed to hold its breath as the horrifying reality of the child's statement sank into his consciousness.
Then, Rafael slowly shifted his eyes toward Cassandra.
His head followed his gaze in a slight, deliberate turn. The small artistic tattoo on his neck shifted above his crisp collar. The muscles in his sharply defined jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, setting into unyielding granite. His mouth became completely still, a terrifying void that swallowed all the warmth in the room.

He held Cassandra’s eyes with a cold, knowing, unwavering stare. He did not yell. He simply stared at her, stripping away every layer of her satin and diamonds, exposing the rot underneath. Every guest remained perfectly attentive and utterly motionless, terrified to even draw a breath.
"Is this the maternal comfort you promised my family, Cassandra?" Rafael asked, his deep voice barely a whisper, yet resonating with absolute, lethal intent.
