Chapter 10

The morning sun cast a cold, pale light over the shattered glass and scarred marble of the Whitlock estate. The air still smelled faintly of cordite and smoke, a lingering ghost of the violence that had claimed the night. But inside the grand dining room, where the chaos had first been ignited, a strange, profound peace had settled. The velvet chairs were righted, the debris swept away, and the fortress stood unbowed.
Rafael stood by the tall, repaired windows of his private study, gazing out over the sprawling grounds. He had changed into a fresh, immaculate dark three-piece suit, his powerful shoulders carrying the weight of his newly solidified empire. The extremely short stubble on his jawline perfectly framed his cold, perceptive eyes as he listened to Marcus’s final casualty report.
"Are the remaining Vane territories completely under our control, Marcus?" Rafael asked, not turning away from the glass.
"Yes, Boss," Marcus grunted, shifting his weight. "The capos surrendered at dawn when they heard Victor was dead. The entire eastern seaboard is yours now. And Cassandra... the commission took her. They were not pleased about her father's unsanctioned war."
"Do you believe they will show her any more mercy than she showed my daughter?" Rafael inquired, his deep voice dropping to a terrifying, satisfied rumble.
"Not a chance in hell, sir," Marcus replied grimly.
"Will you ensure the cleanup crews are finished before noon?" Rafael asked, finally turning his broad shoulders toward the door. "Shall we prepare for a new beginning?"
As Marcus left to carry out the orders, the heavy oak door of the study opened again. Freya stepped inside, and Rafael’s breath hitched slightly in his chest. She was no longer wearing the sophisticated black maid dress. Instead, she wore a beautifully tailored, emerald-green silk blouse and dark trousers, clothes he had ordered for her before the sun rose. Her dark hair was pinned up elegantly, and she stood with a graceful, commanding posture.
"Did you sleep at all, Freya?" Rafael asked, closing the distance between them, his cold eyes warming instantly at the sight of her.
"A little," Freya answered softly, her softly heart-shaped face glowing despite the trauma of the night. "June is still sleeping. The doctor checked on her, she's perfectly fine."
"Do you believe the savior of the Whitlock family should be sleeping in the servant's quarters anymore?" Rafael inquired, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touching his lips.
Freya shook her head, returning his smile, her expressive brows softening. "No. I suppose not."
"Have you considered what you wish to do now that you are free of the shadows?" Rafael asked, his tattooed hand reaching out to gently grasp hers.
"I haven't thought that far ahead," Freya admitted, stepping closer to his towering frame. "But... I want to be here. With June. And with you."
"Are you prepared for the darkness that comes with this name?" Rafael asked, his jaw settling into a firm line as he looked down at her. "Do you understand that the violence of last night is the reality of my world?"
"I understand," Freya said, her voice steady and resolute. "I am not afraid of the dark, not as long as I am with you."
Rafael’s cold eyes softened completely, filled with a deep, profound devotion that he had not allowed himself to feel in years. He pulled her against his chest, a heavy anchor in the uncertain world they were about to navigate together.
"Shall we begin your education in the family business, then?" Rafael asked, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
"Yes," Freya whispered, wrapping her arms around his powerful shoulders.
Before Rafael could speak again, a small, sleepy voice echoed from the hallway outside the study.
"Papa?"
Rafael and Freya stepped apart slightly as June appeared in the doorway, wearing her thick cotton pajamas and clutching a small stuffed bear. She rubbed her tired eyes, looking up at them with a small, hesitant smile when she saw Freya standing so closely to her father.
"Did you have a good sleep, June?" Rafael asked, his voice returning to a warm, gentle rumble.
"Yes, Papa," June said, walking slowly into the room. She reached out and grabbed Freya's hand, looking up at her with profound trust. "Are you going to stay with us, Freya?"
May you like
Rafael looked at the beautiful woman holding his daughter's hand, his heart finally full after years of calculated emptiness.
"Shall we go have breakfast and talk about our future?" Rafael asked, smiling as he led his new family out of the study and into the light.
