Chapter 9

The burn specialist finished wrapping Maya’s hands in fresh, clean bandages. He packed his medical bag quietly, offering a respectful nod to the Don before slipping out of the room, leaving the family in absolute privacy.

Alex remained kneeling beside the examination table. The adrenaline that had fueled his cold, calculated violence was slowly receding, leaving behind a heavy, exhausting realization. He had built an empire to protect his family from the monsters outside his walls, entirely blind to the monster living inside his own home.

"I am sorry," Alex whispered, his voice thick with a raw, agonizing regret. He looked at Maya’s bandaged hands, the physical evidence of his failure to protect her. "I should never have let her treat you like a servant. I should have seen the resentment."

"Alex, look at me," Maya said softly. She reached out with her bandaged hands, gently resting them against his broad chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beneath his tailored vest.

He met her gaze, his cold, intimidating eyes softening entirely.

"You are not responsible for her cruelty," Maya murmured, her American accent strong and unwavering. "She hid it perfectly when you were in the room. But the moment you walked through that door today... you didn't hesitate. You chose us over your own mother. You chose your family over the syndicate's optics. I have never felt safer than I do right now."

Alex closed his eyes, leaning his face into her bandaged touch. The profound loyalty and trust in her voice anchored his soul.

"I will burn the entire world to ash before I let anyone hurt you again," Alex promised, a low, lethal hum vibrating in his chest.

"I know you will," Maya smiled faintly. She kissed the top of his head. "Now, help me up. I want to take our daughter to her own room. She needs to sleep in her own bed."

Alex stood up to his full, towering height. He gently scooped Rosie out of Maya’s lap, holding the sleeping three-year-old securely against his shoulder. He then offered his arm to Maya, who leaned against him for support as she slipped off the examination table.

They walked slowly out of the medical wing and took the private elevator back up to the secure family quarters in the west wing of the estate. The heavy oak doors of the nursery clicked shut behind them. The room was a sanctuary of soft, warm light and plush rugs.

Alex gently laid Rosie in her bed, pulling the heavy comforter up to her chin. He lingered for a moment, watching the steady rise and fall of her chest, ensuring she was completely at peace.

He turned around to find Maya standing by the window, looking out at the darkened estate grounds. The cinematic, bright daylight had faded entirely into a deep, pitch-black night.

"The house feels different," Maya observed quietly.

"It is clean," Alex replied, stepping up behind her and wrapping his arms carefully around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder. "The infection has been permanently removed."

"What about Grant's men?" Maya asked, the practical reality of their dangerous life creeping back in. "He ran the northern ports. If he is gone, his lieutenants might rebel. They might think you are weakened."

"Let them think," Alex whispered into her hair, his cold, sharp intellect already calculating the next tactical move. "Tomorrow, I will call a meeting of all the senior capos. I will inform them of the leadership change in the northern ports. If anyone questions the disappearance of my mother or my cousin, I will give them the exact same answer I gave Grant."

Maya shivered slightly, leaning back into his solid, masculine warmth. "It will be a bloodbath."

"It will be a message," Alex corrected smoothly.
