Chapter 5

The silence in the dining room was absolute, suffocating the bright, cinematic light. The steam rising from the ruined table smelled sickly sweet, a grotesque contrast to the impending violence. Evelyn Vance stood frozen at the head of the table, her fair skin entirely drained of color. The arrogant matriarch who had ruled the estate for decades finally understood that her son’s loyalty to his bloodline did not extend to her.
"Alex, this is madness," Evelyn stammered, her voice shaking as she clutched her pearl necklace. "You are holding my guests hostage over a misunderstanding. The child is clumsy. Maya dropped the pot. It was an accident!"
"Maya dropped a pot," Alex repeated softly, his deep voice carrying effortlessly across the room. He did not look at Maya; he kept his eyes locked on his mother. "She dropped a pot, and instead of taking my daughter to a hospital, you brought them back into this dining room and demanded they wait for you to eat."
"I... I was assessing the situation!" Evelyn lied frantically, taking a step back as Alex took a slow, measured step forward. "We have an image to maintain, Alex! We cannot have the wife of the Don running to the emergency room in hysterics! I was handling it internally!"
"You were torturing them," Alex corrected, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "You wanted to remind a civilian wife and a three-year-old child that they are entirely at your mercy when I am not in the room."
"She doesn't belong here!" Evelyn suddenly shrieked, the panic tearing away her aristocratic facade, revealing the ugly, venomous jealousy beneath. She pointed a shaking finger at Maya, who was standing quietly near the kitchen archway, her bandaged hands held protectively against her chest. "She is soft! She is weak! She doesn't understand the sacrifices required to lead this syndicate! I survived your father! I survived the wars! I was only trying to harden them!"
"By boiling my daughter's hands," Alex stated, the words cold and devoid of all human emotion.
He slowly lowered Rosie from his chest, setting her gently on her feet behind him, near Maya. "Maya. Take Rosie. Stand behind the guards."
"Alex," Maya whispered, her voice trembling but filled with an unwavering trust. She knelt down, wrapping her bandaged arms carefully around the crying toddler, and pulled Rosie back toward the secured exit.
Alex turned his full, terrifying attention back to Evelyn. He adjusted the cuffs of his crisp white dress shirt, the artistic tattoos on his hands flexing.
"You believed that because you gave me life, you were immune to the consequences of this world," Alex said slowly. He walked past the ruined dining table, his polished shoes crunching over broken crystal. "You believed the title of 'Mother' granted you absolute authority over my blood."

"I am your mother!" Evelyn cried, tears of genuine terror finally spilling over her cheeks. "You cannot touch me! The commission will not allow patricide! The other families will view you as a monster!"
"I am a monster, Evelyn," Alex whispered, stopping just inches away from her. The cinematic light caught the sharp angles of his jawline. "But I am the monster you created to protect this family. And today, I realized the greatest threat to this family was sitting at the head of my table."
