Chapter 10

The sun rose over the Vance estate the next morning, casting a brilliant, warm, natural light over the manicured lawns. The cinematic brightness of the new day stood in stark contrast to the absolute darkness of the night before. The estate was quiet, the heavy security presence slightly relaxed now that the immediate internal threat had been eradicated.

Alex sat in his private study, drinking a cup of black coffee. He had not slept. He was wearing a fresh, impeccably tailored dark suit, the artistic tattoos on his hands stark against the white porcelain cup. The room was a fortress of mahogany and leather, a sanctuary where wars were planned and empires were managed.

The heavy doors to the study opened slowly.

Vincent stepped into the room. His face was pale, and he looked incredibly tense. He held a secure encrypted tablet in his hand.

"Boss," Vincent said quietly, keeping his volume low.

"Speak," Alex commanded, his deep, raspy voice echoing in the quiet room.

"The northern lieutenants accepted the change in leadership without a single word of protest," Vincent reported, stepping closer to the desk. "The transition is complete. Grant’s crew has fallen in line."

"And the bunker?" Alex asked, his sharp jawline tightening.

"Secured," Vincent confirmed. "She is locked in. The acoustic dampening is active. She won't hear a sound from the outside world, and we won't hear her."

"Good," Alex murmured, taking a slow sip of his coffee. He looked at the tablet in his underboss's hand. "Why do you look like you've seen a ghost, Vincent?"

Vincent swallowed hard. He placed the tablet onto the desk and slid it across the polished wood toward Alex.

"While we were sanitizing Evelyn’s private quarters," Vincent explained, his American accent tight with tension. "We found a hidden safe behind a painting. It contained offshore routing numbers, encrypted communication logs, and physical cash. Boss... she wasn't just terrorizing your wife out of spite."

Alex set his coffee cup down. The cold, intimidating Mafia boss focused entirely on the screen. He tapped the tablet, scrolling through the decrypted logs.

Evelyn had been communicating with the Romanov syndicate—their largest and most violent rival operating out of New York. The transcripts detailed a horrific, meticulously planned transaction. Evelyn had agreed to hand over the logistical codes to the eastern shipping lanes to the Russians in exchange for a massive payout and their military backing.

But the final line of the transcript was the one that made Alex’s blood run completely cold.

“The wife and the child are liabilities. I am breaking them down. Once they are isolated, my son will be vulnerable. I will deliver him to you.”

"She was going to sell me to the Russians," Alex whispered. The volume of his voice was so low it barely registered above the ambient hum of the room, yet it carried the terrifying weight of an impending massacre.

"She was coordinating a full-scale invasion of our territory, Alex," Vincent confirmed, his face pale. "The Romanovs are mobilizing. They expect the codes by tonight. When she doesn't deliver, they will know something went wrong. They will strike the city."

Alex slowly handed the tablet back. He didn't explode into anger. The veteran Mafia boss retreated into a state of chilling, absolute tactical clarity.

"They believe my house is divided," Alex said softly, standing up from the desk. "They believe I am blind to the treason that was occurring under my own roof."

"What are your orders, Boss?" Vincent asked, drawing his weapon and checking the magazine.

"Lock down the city," Alex commanded, not looking back. "Arm every man on the payroll. We are taking the war to New York."
