Chapter 9

The grand foyer descended into absolute chaos. The deafening roar of automatic gunfire echoed off the high, vaulted ceilings, tearing through the pristine elegance of the estate. Plaster exploded from the walls, and the cinematic lighting flickered violently as bullets chewed through the electrical wiring. Smoke quickly filled the air, acrid and blinding.

Emrys Valehurst stood his ground, a terrifying force of nature in his tailored dark suit. He fired with lethal accuracy, dropping three heavily armed invaders before they could fully breach the threshold. He moved with a brutal, practiced grace, utilizing the marble pillars and heavy antique furniture for cover. His dark, swept-back hair was dusted with plaster, and his sharp jawline was set in a mask of unrelenting fury.

Coralie stayed crouched behind the thick marble pillar, her hands covering her ears against the concussive noise. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She watched Emrys fight, mesmerized and terrified by the absolute violence he was capable of unleashing. He was protecting his home, his empire, and most importantly to him, he was protecting her.

“Are you holding the line at the east corridor?” Emrys yelled into his tactical earpiece over the din of the battle.

He listened for a brief moment, his expression darkening. The rival family had flanked them, breaching the estate from multiple access points. They were attempting to surround the main foyer.

“Fall back to the grand staircase!” Emrys commanded his remaining men in the foyer. “We hold the high ground!”

Emrys reached back without looking, his tattooed hand finding Coralie’s arm and pulling her up from her crouch.

“Run up the stairs, now!” Emrys shouted over the gunfire, shoving her gently toward the sweeping marble steps.

Coralie didn't hesitate. She gathered the skirt of her black maid dress and sprinted up the stairs, her flats making almost no sound on the stone. Emrys and his top enforcers provided heavy covering fire, slowly retreating up the steps behind her.

They reached the second-floor landing, establishing a defensive choke point. The invaders surged into the foyer below, but the tactical advantage of the high ground was devastating. Emrys and his men rained fire down upon them, halting their advance instantly.

From the smoke-filled doorway below, a figure emerged, shielded by a wall of armored men. It was the boss of the rival family, the father of the bride Emrys had just rescued from the floorboards. He was an older man, his face twisted in a mask of absolute hatred.

“Give me my daughter, Emrys!” the rival boss roared, his voice echoing over the dying gunfire. “You betrayed the alliance! You locked her in a tomb!”

Emrys stepped to the edge of the marble balcony, entirely exposed, his weapon lowered but ready.

“Did you honestly believe your own lies, Marcus, or were you hoping I was foolish enough to die believing them?” Emrys asked, his deep voice carrying clearly through the massive space.

Marcus glared up at him. “What are you talking about? You kidnapped her!”

“If I kidnapped her, why did I just spend the last hour digging her out from under my own floorboards, placed there by a traitor working for you?” Emrys asked, his dark eyes narrowing.

Marcus froze. The accusation hung heavily in the smoky air. He looked at his men, a flicker of genuine confusion crossing his hardened face.

“Do you truly not know that Dashiell orchestrated the entire coup to prevent our families from merging?” Emrys asked, realizing with a sudden, chilling clarity that the war they were fighting might be built on a devastating lie.
