Chapter 10

The silence that fell over the grand foyer was heavier and far more dangerous than the gunfire that had preceded it. The smoke swirled lazily in the ambient light, casting long, dramatic shadows across the marble staircase. Emrys stood at the edge of the balcony, his broad shoulders squared, looking down at the rival boss. Coralie remained crouched safely behind the balustrade, her expressive eyes wide as she watched the delicate, lethal negotiation unfold.

Marcus lowered his weapon slightly, his fair, aging skin pale with uncertainty. He looked at the bodies of his men littering the beautiful estate floor, then back up at Emrys.

“Dashiell told me you found out about our expansion plans and locked her away as leverage,” Marcus said, his American accent gruff but hesitant. “He said you were demanding we hand over the southern ports for her safe return.”

“Did it not occur to you to ask why a man who controls the largest port on the eastern seaboard would risk a bloodbath for territory he doesn't need?” Emrys asked, his deep voice vibrating with absolute, undeniable logic.

Emrys holstered his weapon slowly, a gesture of massive, calculated risk. He rested his tattooed hands on the marble railing.

“Dashiell is currently locked in my sub-basement, awaiting execution for treason against both our families,” Emrys stated clearly. “Your daughter is resting in my secure guest wing, traumatized but alive. She was buried in the dark to prevent this alliance, Marcus. If you continue this assault, you are simply finishing Dashiell’s work for him.”

Marcus stared up at the young mafia boss. He saw the cold, unwavering truth in Emrys’s eyes. The older man let out a long, ragged exhale, slowly lowering his weapon completely. He raised a hand, signaling his surviving men to stand down.

“Let me see her,” Marcus demanded, his voice cracking with the sudden, overwhelming relief of a father. “Let me see my daughter, and we walk away.”

“Will you agree to leave your weapons at the door and enter my home as a guest, rather than an invader?” Emrys asked, refusing to yield an inch of his authority.

Marcus nodded slowly. “You have my word.”

Emrys turned to his enforcers. “Escort him to the guest wing. Anyone else steps past the threshold, shoot them.”

As the tension finally broke, Emrys let out a slow breath, the adrenaline slowly ebbing from his system. He turned away from the balcony and looked down at Coralie. The beautiful housemaid was kneeling on the marble floor, her sophisticated black dress covered in dust, her white apron stained with soot.

He walked over to her and knelt down, ignoring the throbbing pain in his bruised right hand. He reached out with his left hand, gently cupping her delicate face.

“Are you unharmed, Coralie?” Emrys asked, his voice softening entirely, stripping away the cold, terrifying mafia boss to reveal the man underneath.

Coralie looked up into his dark eyes, tears of profound relief spilling over her rosy cheeks. She leaned into his warm palm, placing her small hand over his.

“I am safe,” Coralie whispered, a tremulous smile breaking across her face. “You kept your promise.”

“Do you think I would ever let anything take you away from me, now that I have finally found you?” Emrys asked, his thumb gently wiping away a streak of dirt from her cheek.

The estate was severely damaged, the political landscape of the syndicate was forever altered, and a traitor awaited judgment in the basement. The future was undeniably complicated and dangerous. But as Emrys knelt there on the marble floor, holding the brave, beautiful woman who had fought for him, he knew that the true foundation of his empire had finally been laid.
