Chapter 10

The night was completely silent, save for the crunch of gravel beneath Robert’s heavy duty boots. He moved with the practiced stealth of a predator, sticking to the deep shadows cast by the abandoned buildings. He approached the rear of the warehouse, completely bypassing the heavily guarded front entrance.

The chain-link fence separating him from the property was thick and rusted. Robert didn't hesitate. He raised the heavy bolt cutters, the same tool he had used to free Emma just hours ago, and clamped them around the thick metal wire.

With a series of sharp, violent snaps, he cut a hole large enough to slip through. He left the cutters in the dirt and drew his sidearm, keeping the tactical shotgun slung over his back for close-quarters combat.

He approached the rear loading dock. A single, heavy metal door stood closed, illuminated by a flickering, bright yellow security light. Robert pressed his ear against the cold steel. Inside, he could hear the muffled sounds of frantic activity—heavy crates being moved, people shouting orders.

"Get the transport vans ready!" a muffled voice barked from inside. "Mrs. Harrington wants the inventory moved to the secondary location before midnight! If the cops show up, we burn the building!"

Robert's blood ran ice cold. 'Inventory'. They were talking about children.

He checked the door handle. Locked. Stepping back, Robert raised his sidearm and fired two silenced shots directly into the lock mechanism. The metal shattered. He kicked the heavy door open and immediately threw himself behind a stack of wooden shipping pallets as the echoes of the breach rang through the warehouse.

"Someone's at the back door!" a guard yelled.

Gunfire erupted, bullets chewing into the wooden pallets, sending splinters flying past Robert’s face. He didn't panic. He waited for a lull in the shooting, leaned out from cover, and fired three precise shots. Two guards dropped to the concrete floor, their weapons clattering away.

Robert moved forward, sweeping his weapon across the vast, brightly lit interior of the warehouse. The space was horrific. Rows of small, chain-link cages lined the far wall, resembling a dog kennel more than a human dwelling. Inside several of the cages, terrified, crying children huddled in the corners.

At the center of the room, holding a clipboard and looking absolutely furious, stood Diana Harrington. Her pearl earrings gleamed under the harsh industrial lights.

"You!" Diana screamed, pointing her manicured finger at Robert as he stepped into the light. "I told you to stay away! Kill him!"

The remaining three armed guards raised their automatic rifles, aiming directly at Robert's chest.

Robert didn't seek cover. He didn't run. He stood his ground, his eyes locked on Diana with a terrifying, unyielding promise of violence. He lowered his sidearm and unslung the heavy tactical shotgun from his back, racking a shell into the chamber with a loud, definitive clack.

"I told you what would happen if you touched my daughter," Robert said, his voice booming over the sound of crying children, completely devoid of fear.

Diana’s arrogant smile finally broke, replaced by sheer, primal terror as she realized the Sheriff hadn't come to arrest her. He had come to execute her.

"Fire!" Diana shrieked.

As the guards' fingers tightened on their triggers, Robert raised his weapon, ready to tear the entire corrupt empire to the ground.
