Chapter 1

The afternoon sun beat down on the Harrington estate in brilliant, blinding colors, painting the manicured green lawns and stark white porch in a harsh, cinematic light. The temperature had skyrocketed to a suffocating ninety-five degrees, turning the air into a shimmering haze of heat. Sheriff Robert Ramirez ignored the sweat soaking through his crisp, tan uniform. His heavy duty boots slammed against the wooden steps of the porch. His fair, rosy skin was flushed with a terrifying mixture of adrenaline and absolute dread. In his large, trembling hands, he held a massive pair of industrial bolt cutters.
Tethered to the thick wooden pillar of the porch was his five-year-old daughter, Emma. She was wearing her favorite yellow T-shirt and denim shorts, her usually fair and rosy cheeks now a dangerous, chalky white. Hidden beneath the thin fabric of her shirt, a medical heart monitor was shrieking in a rapid, continuous alarm that cut through the quiet suburban neighborhood. She was barely conscious, her tiny sneakers dragging against the porch floorboards.
Robert is already bracing the heavy bolt cutters around the thick brass lock that held the chain to her ankle. Emma's head rolled back, and she slowly recognized the shiny badge and utility belt of her father.
"Dad…" Emma whispered, her voice cracked and dry with desperate relief. "Please save me."
"I’m right here, baby. I've got you," Robert choked out, his muscles straining as he squeezed the handles of the cutters.
Before the lock could snap, Diana Harrington strode out onto the porch. At fifty-five, she was a picture of wealthy, suburban elegance, wearing a perfectly pressed silk blouse, matching trousers, pearl earrings, and expensive heels. Her skin was fair and rosy, untouched by the brutal heat. She carried a pristine clipboard and stared directly at Robert with cold, dead eyes.
"I don’t care if it's sick," Diana said, her voice coldly authoritative and sharp with absolute contempt. "A disobedient stray still needs to be disciplined."
Robert ignored her, putting his entire body weight into the tool. With a loud, violent crunch, Robert crushed the lock. The heavy chain dropped to the wooden floorboards with a metallic clatter. He immediately dropped the cutters and caught Emma against his chest. Her skin was dangerously hot to the touch.
A few feet away, Mrs. Gable, a neighbor wearing a patterned blouse and trousers, was pressing a smartphone to her ear in sheer panic.
"We need an ambulance immediately!" Mrs. Gable screamed into the phone. "A child is collapsing! Her heart monitor is going off!"
Diana stepped closer, completely unfazed by the medical emergency unfolding on her property. She pointed an manicured finger at the broken brass lock resting near Robert's duty boots.
"You are destroying my property!" Diana shrieked, furious, her voice rising with arrogant disbelief.
Robert gently laid Emma down on her side, shielding her fragile body. He stood up slowly, locking his bloodshot eyes with Diana’s. Without a single word of warning, Robert rushed forward and slapped Diana across the face with terrifying force. The impact sent her crashing hard to the ground, her clipboard clattering away.

Robert looked down at Diana as she clutched her cheek, his face purple with absolute fury.
"You chained a sick child in ninety-five-degree heat!" Robert exploded with rage, his voice echoing across the pristine neighborhood.
