Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Belvedere Ballroom cast a searing, golden radiance across three hundred guests draped in bespoke silk and Italian wool. It was the annual Moretti midsummer banquet, an ostentatious display of wealth and absolute territorial dominance. Waiters in white gloves moved like phantoms, filling flutes with vintage champagne while laughter rippled across the polished mahogany floor. At the central elevated dais, beneath the carved family crest, sat the inner sanctum of the family.

Three-year-old Emma sat in a velvet-cushioned chair beside her sixteen-year-old brother, David. She wore an immaculate blush-pink formal dress with miniature lace trim and ivory patent-leather flats. Her delicate hands were folded neatly in her lap, her wide hazel eyes taking in the glittering spectacle with innocent wonder. Beside her, David adjusted his silk tie, his posture rigid and alert, every inch the dutiful grandson of an empire. He gently nudged a crystal dish toward her.

"Here, Em," David whispered, smiling gently. "Take the candied strawberries before Uncle Leo finishes them all."

"Thank you, David," Emma chirped in her soft, melodious voice, picking up a silver spoon.

Before the silver could touch her plate, a heavy, ring-laden hand slammed onto the linen tablecloth.

Margaret Moretti loomed over the child like an avenging fury draped in sapphire velvet. At sixty-eight, Vincent’s older sister carried herself with the bitter arrogance of someone who believed blood purity was the only currency that mattered. Her throat was choked with three strands of freshwater pearls, her face powdered pale over sharp, haughty cheekbones. With a violent sweep of her wrist, Margaret snatched Emma’s porcelain dinner plate, sending the fruit clattering onto the silver service tray.

"Hey! What are you doing?" David snapped, jumping half out of his seat. "Leave her alone!"

Margaret ignored the teenager completely. Her mouth twisted into a grotesque, venomous sneer. Her pointed designer heel drew back and delivered a brutal, calculated kick against the leg of Emma’s high-backed wooden chair.

The heavy chair tilted instantly, losing its balance on the slick ballroom floor. Emma let out a terrified shriek as the world flipped upside down. She crashed hard onto the marble, her small hands scraping across the stone, the hem of her lace dress tearing against the table leg.

A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the immediate perimeter. Conversations died instantly. Glassware froze halfway to open mouths.

Margaret stood tall, smoothing her diamond rings with unhurried contempt. Her cold, piercing voice cut through the sudden silence like an iron razor.

"Adopted children eat in the kitchen," Margaret proclaimed coldly, looking down at the weeping toddler as if she were a roach beneath her heel. "Not at the high table."

From two chairs down, twenty-five-year-old Laura Moretti lunged forward. Her heels clicked frantically as she dropped to her knees on the marble floor. Her elegant emerald gown pooled around her as she gathered Emma into her arms, pressing the trembling, sobbing little girl against her chest.

"Emma, baby, look at me. Mommy’s got you," Laura breathed, her voice shaking violently with maternal panic and burning fury. She checked Emma’s forehead, her fingers gently smoothing back the girl's soft curls. "Are you hurt? Where does it hurt?"

Emma buried her tear-streaked face into Laura’s collarbone, her tiny shoulders hitching in suffocating gasps. Her small fingers dug desperately into Laura’s diamond bracelet.

"Mommy..." Emma whispered, fighting through choking tears that tore at every heart in the vicinity. "Mommy… am I not really family?"

Laura’s breath hitched in her throat. The innocent question was a dagger driven straight into her chest. She pulled the child tighter, glaring up at Margaret with pure, unadulterated hatred burning in her eyes.

"You sick, miserable bitch," Laura snarled, her voice trembling with rage. "You will pay for this."
