Chapter 2

The dinner service had moved with flawless, terrifying precision, a testament to the iron grip Tristan held over his household. The main courses had been cleared by a silent, efficient staff, leaving only the soft hum of conversation and the clinking of crystal dessert plates. Elsa took a deep, steadying breath, her hands smoothing the crisp white fabric of her apron. She placed a gentle, supportive hand on Ruth’s frail back, guiding the trembling elderly woman out from the shadows of the marble pillar and into the glaring, warm golden light of the dining room.
Every step felt like walking through deep water. Elsa navigated the polished walnut tables, her eyes fixed on the head table where the mafia boss sat in all his imposing glory. Ruth limped beside her, her walking cane clicking softly against the hardwood floor.
As they approached an empty champagne velvet chair near Tristan, Elsa reached for a crystal pitcher resting on a side table. With graceful, practiced movements, she poured a glass of water. She turned to Ruth, placing the water glass directly into the older woman’s trembling hand, supporting the fragile glass from beneath with her own steady fingers.
Ruth looked toward Tristan with anxious, terrifying hesitation. Her tired eyes darted from the commanding mafia boss to the woman in the emerald silk gown standing opposite him.
Felicity, mid-conversation with a politician's wife, noticed the movement in her peripheral vision. She turned her head, her polished, welcoming smile freezing instantly. The blood drained from her fair, rosy skin, leaving her ashen. The smile stiffened into a grotesque, panicked grimace as she recognized the modest floral dress and the worn formal coat of the retired midwife.
Tristan, possessing the instincts of an apex predator, felt the sudden shift in the room's atmosphere. He turned his head, the loose strands of hair shifting across his forehead. His cold, observant eyes dropped to the frail woman standing beside the empty chair, and then to the young housemaid supporting her. He noticed Ruth’s profound, paralyzing fear, and the way her trembling fingers sloshed water over the rim of the crystal glass.
He didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon. He slowly looked directly into Elsa’s expressive eyes, piercing through her with a terrifying, unyielding intensity.
"Elsa," Tristan said.
His deep, low voice dropped a full octave. He allowed a deliberate, agonizing pause to stretch after her name. The sound was a command that demanded absolute silence. Every single guest stopped eating. Conversations died in their throats. Dozens of powerful men and women turned their heads toward Tristan in total, suffocating silence. The golden light from the chandeliers suddenly felt harsh and exposing.
"Who is this woman?" Tristan asked.
The question hung in the air, heavy and lethal. Elsa felt the eyes of the entire criminal underworld burning into her skin. Her breath hitched in her throat. She looked at Ruth, who was shaking violently, and then at Felicity, whose emerald gown rustled as she took a panicked half-step backward.

Elsa met Tristan’s intense gaze. She forced herself not to look away from his perceptive eyes. Her inner brows lifted slightly, an expression of profound, restrained courage. She swallowed hard, her throat painfully dry, knowing that her next words would alter the course of their lives forever.
"She delivered your son," Elsa answered, her voice soft, but carrying with careful, devastating clarity across the silent room.
