Chapter 10

The little girl scrambled backward, pressing herself against the wall, her small hands clutching the pink blanket tightly to her chest. She stared at the towering man kneeling before her, terrified by his imposing size and the chaos erupting in the house below.
"Who are you?" the girl whispered, her voice trembling.
Tristan’s heart shattered completely. Six years of missed birthdays, six years of stolen moments, all orchestrated by a woman who had smiled in his face. He reached out with a trembling, tattooed hand, desperate to hold her, but he forced himself to stop, recognizing the fear in her eyes.
"Do you know the name you were given when you were born?" Tristan asked, his deep voice incredibly soft, choked with overwhelming emotion.
The girl shook her head slowly. "They call me Lily. But... Felicity said my real family didn't want me."
A choked sob escaped Elsa’s lips. She stepped past Tristan, moving gracefully into the room. She knelt on the floor beside the mafia boss, her black maid dress pooling around her. She offered the girl a warm, beautifully reassuring smile, projecting all the maternal safety she possessed.
"Hello, sweetheart," Elsa said gently, keeping her voice low and soothing. "My name is Elsa. And this man right here? He has been looking for you since the day you were born. Felicity lied to you. Your family wants you very much."
Lily looked from Elsa to Tristan, her wide, perceptive eyes—so much like her father's—searching their faces for the truth.
"Are you my real dad?" Lily asked, her lower lip trembling.
"Would I ever lie to you?" Tristan asked, a single tear escaping his eye and tracking down his angular face. "I am your father. And you have a brother named Sophie who is waiting to meet you."
The mention of a brother seemed to break the spell of fear. Lily slowly lowered the blanket, taking a small, hesitant step forward. Tristan opened his arms, and the little girl practically fell into his chest.
Tristan wrapped his powerful arms around her, burying his face in her dark hair, holding her in a fierce, desperate embrace. He closed his eyes, weeping silently, finally reunited with the piece of his soul he hadn't even known was missing.
Elsa watched them, tears streaming down her softly rounded cheeks. She had risked her life to bring the truth to light, and in doing so, she had fundamentally altered the fate of the entire Kincaid empire.
After several long minutes, Tristan stood up, lifting Lily effortlessly into his arms. He held her securely against his chest, completely ignoring the rain and soot that stained his white shirt. He looked down at Elsa, offering her a hand to help her up.
"Are you ready to go home, Lily?" Tristan asked his daughter.
"Yes, please," Lily whispered, resting her head on his broad shoulder.
Tristan turned to Elsa, his cold, observant eyes filled with a profound, unspoken devotion. The war with the Crane family would undoubtedly begin tomorrow, but for tonight, he had won the only battle that mattered.
"Will you walk out of this house with us, Elsa?" Tristan asked gently.
"I will," Elsa promised, taking his tattooed hand.
They walked out of the bedroom and descended the stairs. The tactical teams had secured the house, the fake parents kneeling on the floor in handcuffs, awaiting their fate. Tristan didn't even glance at them. He walked out into the freezing rain, shielding his daughter with his own body, and climbed into the waiting armored SUV.
As the convoy sped back toward the estate, the city lights blurred outside the windows. Tristan sat in the back, holding Lily as she finally drifted off to sleep against his chest. He looked across the cabin at Elsa.
"Do you believe the savior of the Kincaid family should ever wear a maid's uniform again?" Tristan inquired, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touching his lips.
Elsa looked down at her black dress, then back up at the terrifying, movie-star handsome mafia boss who was offering her a place in his dangerous, blood-soaked world. She was no longer just a servant; she was the woman who had saved a king.

"What happens now?" Elsa asked softly.
"Shall we go rebuild our family, and prepare for the war?" Tristan asked, the promise of impending conflict hanging heavily, yet beautifully, in the quiet night.
